We explored black skimmer incubation #ecology using #timelapse photography and temperature loggers. High pair synchronisation at midday seems crucial, but more studies are needed on whether they’re at thermal limits onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/…

The XVI International Seabird Group Conference in Coimbra, Portugal earlier this month was teeming with new research and the very people striving to answer the many mysteries held by this fascinating group of birds.
It was great to see Yelkouan #shearwaters so well presented at the conference, with two posters from LIFE PanPuffinus!. Thanks to novel capture techniques and modern tracking devices, we can now GPS-tag shearwaters out at sea and find new colonies (previously, it was typically the other way around). Using this method, 5 previously unknown colonies were identified in Greece, 3 of which are on inaccessible cliffs of larger islands, instead of uninhabited small islets as usual!
We’ve also been able to measure how deep Yelkouan shearwaters dive, with a species record set at 51 meters. Most dives occur during the day, peaking around sunrise and sunset. This finding has important implications for the LIFE PanPuffinus! work with fishers—long-lines and trammel nets should ideally be set during darkness to avoid bycatch
Tag purchases in Greece were supported by LIFE MareNatura, a perfect example of Networking in action!

Many thanks to @ECOTOP_UC for organising a wonderful conference, @TheSeabirdGroup & everyone who presented, attended, visited our @BirdLifeMarine poster about seabirdtracking.org & took part in our workshop on offshore wind sensitivity mapping! #CoimbraSeabirds

Powerful talk by @Signe_Dalsgaard at #CoimbraSeabirds showing paired historic and current photos illustrating the drastic declines in Norway’s #seabirds.
Striking, sad images of now silent cliffs.

Do you want to know how old the #petrel you just caught is but it isn't wearing a band/ring? Now you can find out with just a blood sample. This new paper develops a method using DNA methylation that gives a surprisingly accurate age estimate. #seabird

Does conservation work? Our paper by @rewild shows that it does: a global analysis of 665 trials (incl. several by @RSPBScience) found that conservation improved the state of biodiversity or slowed declines in two-thirds of cases @BirdLife_Sci science.org/doi/10.1126/scie…

BREAKING NEWS: permanent closure of sandeel fishery in the English North Sea announced today as a lifeline for the UKs struggling seabirds. Proud to have played a part in this alongside many others. This could be the single greatest measure to deliver resilience to our seabirds.

Specifically, the @ornithologiki team and iSea placed black and white contrast panels on the trammel nets with the aim to make them more visible to the Yelkouan Shearwaters and therefore minimize #bycatch.

The cliffs of Ħal Far are under threat of yet another pressure as the @pa_malta (PA) initiated a partial review of the 2006 South Malta Local Plan (as amended in 2017) specifically for Ħal Far. As explained earlier this week through a joint ENGO press release, this is nothing short of a deceptive exercise to green light the development of an airstrip for model airplanes on the very edge of the cliffs designated as a Special Protected Area and a Site of Community Importance. The secret agreement reached in February 2022 to build a mini-airstrip for model airplanes in Birżebbuġa’s #WiedŻnuber had led to a public outcry calling for the whole valley to be designated as an #ODZ.
Whilst we have submitted our feedback as part of a public consultation exercise whose deadline is today, we are calling on the PA and the Environment & Resources Authority (ERA) to act as guardians of the Natura 2000 sites and to declare this part of Ħal Far as an official buffer zone to secure the vulnerable ecosystems of Wied Żnuber. The area should remain free from any type of development and be restored to ensure that the #Natura2000 site, its habitats, flora and fauna, including nesting shearwaters, reach a Favourable Conservation Status.
