On a recent visit to @MarshsLibrary, founded in 1707, we learned a lot of interesting things, including a very good reason not to lick the pages of a unique hand-coloured map from 1579 …

Today I am working with an exquisite first edition of John Milton's "Areopagitica" (1644), his principled demand "For the Liberty of Unlicenc'd Printing" & "the liberty to know, to utter, and to argue freely according to conscience" @MarshsLibrary

Phenomenal first day @MarshsLibrary where I am primarily working on Sidney's networks & the publication of his "Discourses" (1698), but also my project on seventeenth-century England & Sengoku Japan - today via a copy of "Purchas his Pilgrimes. In Five Bookes" (1625)

A great turnout to hear Dr Máire Kennedy and Dr Jason McElligott at our lunchtime lecture. We learned many things: Annotate your books so that you can't be accused by future generations of having had a private library just for show. Daniel O'Connell was a great annotator! 🧵

Looking forward to my research trip to @MarshsLibrary this week (starting Weds). Finally, after Covid delay. Been there just the once before, 12 years ago, but a lovely library I recall. The staff have been very helpful and supportive.
