A few photos from my visit to the Hierapolis Archaeology Museum and the ancient city of Hierapolis, near the incredible white terraces of Pamukkale, Turkey. It was amazing to stand among structures and artifacts that have survived for centuries and to get an up-close look at the craftsmanship and engineering of the ancient Roman world. A Roman marble sarcophagus decorated with intricate garland reliefs, ancient stone hypocaust substructures and arch supports beneath the Roman bath ruins, and the magnificent Roman Theatre of Hierapolis—one of the most impressive sights in the ancient city. The striking white travertine terraces and thermal pools of Pamukkale (the "Cotton Castle") are located in Denizli, Turkey. Naturally occurring geologic salt called travertine has warm springs running over it.

There are some waterfalls nearby; the Romans were geniuses when it came to diverting and controlling water flow, long before pumps.
