Today, 565 children say goodbye to St Joseph's College, Reading for the last time. We wish them, their families and all the staff moving on the very best for the future.
For 132 years, this school adapted to changing circumstances. When financial pressures grew, its governors explored mergers, acquisition and new investment. They found no viable way to keep the school open.
Keir Starmer said there was "no evidence schools will close."
Yet the Government's own impact assessment accepted its policy would lead to additional school closures.
St Joseph's Governors said VAT on school fees and the removal of business rates relief "added to the financial pressure."
Every school has its own circumstances. But Government policy made vulnerable schools less resilient. Some—like St Joseph's—could no longer survive.

Extraordinary player, extraordinary leader
One of England's all-time greatest captains, Ben Stokes, has decided to retire from international cricket at the end of this Test match.
Ben, you have been the most inspirational captain, leader and legend this team could have ever hoped for.
We love you so much and wish you all the best in your retirement ❤️
England will never be the same again.
