Amulet for "overcoming" trauma. Spotted at a temple on the Chita peninsula. Wondering if people have seen any other omamori specifically relating to mental health.
Waiting at a bus stop in Fukuoka today and up walked a yakuza in sun glasses and a black suit (picture the rapper Pit Bull and make him Japanese). Suits down, lights a cigarette and starts blasting Carless Whisper on his phone. Some days are gifts.
I totally agree with @mclaughlin_levi that you can't do fieldwork in Japan without using Line, but what hasn't been talked about nearly enough is the need to master entire conversations that consist entirely of stickers.
Every day, Tokyo poses this existential question: Would you rather have readily available, very clean pubic toilets OR
garbage cans?
You can only have one.
Choose wisely.
What if your goal is not to "be Japanese" or to make over 20 million yen a year, but simply to be able to communicate at a deep level with people about their lives?

Very valuable thread on academic Q&A sessions. Having recently endured a Q&A session led by a very passive/timid(?) facilitator after a paper I delivered in which an extremely rude outsider to my discipline was allowed to dominate for an extended period, I'm all for this.
