What makes math Interesting Anyway?
Where do you see the link between mathematics and creativity?
What does it mean to be creative in math?
What excites you in math?
I'd love to hear some feedback on these ideas:

I worry that mathematics is too often taught as if it’s bad-tasting medicine that students just have to take, rather than teaching it with the purpose of showing off its beauty and elegance, and feeling joy when engaging in it.
The Ontario curriculum makes a point in describing this as a goal in mathematics learning.
How incredible would it be if we approached the teaching and learning of math like this?

People use “foundational knowledge” as an excuse for regressive pedagogies but no one can define it. All knowledge is foundational after you build on it.
Replying to @ddmeyer @shortteachergal
Much of the variation in math understanding is because some students lack foundational prior knowledge. When teaching fails to recognize the existence of those knowledge gaps, those students fall farther and farther behind, amplifying the class-wide disparities.

Thanks everyone for talking math tonight! Hopefully you are inspired to consider a few new ways to "practice" math in your classrooms!

Q7 - Final question #elemmathchat
How can we make sure our students are "practicing" content while also engaging in these 5 strands?
Let's think about the types of "Practice" our students experience:
#elemmathchat
A4b - Hopefully we can see that students playing a game can include decisions... can include time to think and strategize, not just answering simple questions quickly.
Build thinkers... not just mindless doers
#ElemMathChat
Q4b - You have a few choices here to get close to 100 as possible... add 14 or 41... you can eliminate any of the 4 turns if you want.
#elemmathchat
A4 - Here we see a game that is about addition (but possibly subtraction). Yet, conversations about probability and place value will come up.
We also see representations, adaptive reasoning, strategies, part-part-whole thinking...
#ElemMathChat
Q4. What might be "practiced" during a game like this?
#elemmathchat
Q2. What are some things you want students to "practice"?

Q1 - Tonight we will be talking about "practice". What does this look like in your classroom(s)?
