The PMAX meta analysis you’ve been waiting for!
To include brand terms or exclude brand terms from PMAX. Here is what we've seen from the customers who have tested this...
1. INCLUDING BRANDED TERMS DRIVES MORE INCREMENTAL REVENUE THAN EXCLUDING 50% OF THE TIME
In other words, by total revenue, this race is a dead heat. Though the caveat here is that excluding branded terms drove 24% more incremental revenue on average across all tests. Put simply: When excluding brand won, it won big, whereas most of the brand-including victories were by narrow margins.
2. 100% OF EXPERIMENTS FOUND EXCLUDING BRAND TERMS LOWERS CAC
Only a subset of experiment results included a new customer KPI, but the lopsidedness of this metric deserves some attention. The range of outcomes in favor of excluding brand terms was a 19% to 60% lower CAC – a 40% reduction in acquisition cost on average. Putting these two results together, including brand terms seems to drive disproportionate impact against existing customers, but may distract the algorithm away from new customers as a result.
3. BRANDS WITH AN AOV OVER $238 DROVE 27% MORE INCREMENTAL REVENUE WHEN INCLUDING BRAND TERMS
The plot thickens.
This is why you should be mindful of applying someone else's test result to your own brand. While the sample showed stronger results for excluding branded terms on average, there was a subset of high-AOV brands that found better success when including brand.
The reason for this likely comes down to data scarcity. Higher AOVs correlate with higher CACs, which means less data fueling the algorithm. If you’re a brand in this category or just don’t spend enough to reach adequate volume thresholds, you may want to reconsider before applying those brand exclusions – an analysis from Smarter Ecommerce suggests the signal threshold is probably in the range of 300 to 1,000 monthly conversions.

PSA: Consumers are going to start slowing their spending over the next 8-10 wks while they wait for their preferred brands to start holiday sales.
This is normal consumer behavior and will end as soon as BFCM season starts.

Here it comes #PPC folks. Soon @GoogleAds will force broad match on everyone or possibly even restrict known conversion opportunities to broad match and not allow them on exact match.

Don't follow Google's recommendation for using 30 days conversion window for 'Acquisition Key events' and 90 days conversion window for all other key events in #GA4.
Instead, set your conversion window to 7 days for Acquisition key events and 30 days for all other key events to get the most accurate reporting possible in GA4.
.
.
In the context of GA4, the 'conversion window' is the time period (measured in days) that determines how far back in time a touchpoint (e.g., exposure to a marketing channel) is eligible for conversion credit.
For example, a 30 days conversion window means a touchpoint is eligible for conversion credit for up to 30 days from the day it first occurred.
.
.
Using a longer conversion window because of longer sales cycles may produce optimum results in the world with no user consent, ad blockers, or privacy extensions.
But we don't live in the year 2010 any more.
Using the narrowest possible attribution window is no longer optional but a mandatory requirement to get optimum results from conversion attribution in 2024 and beyond.
Otherwise, you will continue to get muddy analytical insight.
.
.
In the world of multi-channel marketing, a customer is exposed to multiple touchpoints over a long period of time.
Not all touchpoints are equally valuable.
For example, let's say a user clicks on your LinkedIn post before purchasing on your website.
This act of reading and clicking on your LinkedIn post is far more valuable in influencing conversion than any ad click that occurred months ago because of the time decay factor and exposure to multiple touchpoints.
Now, GA4 can still give conversion credit to that Google ad your customer clicked on 80 days ago because of the default 90 days conversion window set for click-through conversions.
And if you are heavily involved in multi-channel marketing, using long conversion windows means many channels can take credit for the same conversion, which could result in overstated revenue.
That's why it is important to use the narrowest possible conversion windows for all your analytics and advertising platforms, regardless of the length of your sales cycle.
The use of a longer attribution window increases the likelihood of external factors influencing the conversion.
For example, if the conversion window is too wide, other marketing activities, customer touchpoints, or changes in market conditions may occur, making it difficult to attribute the conversion accurately.
By narrowing the conversion window, you can minimize the impact of such external factors and focus on the immediate impact of the tracked activity.
It does not matter which touchpoint or channel truly introduced your brand.
What matters is the touchpoint/channel that most influenced conversions.
And time plays a great role in determining that influence.

This is how most marketers use ChatGPT…
Prompt: Give me 10 content ideas around [insert subject]
The issue with that prompt is that you get terrible results.
Instead, you should try this prompt.
***Start Prompt***
Please do customer research for the [insert your industry, and ideally, it should be at least two words] industry.
Tell me 10 questions and 10 problems that [insert a description of your ideal customer] face.
Please place the results in a table. The Y-axis should be labeled 1 through 10, and the X-axis should be labeled "Questions" and "Problems."
***End Prompt***
You’ll generate 20 content ideas with this prompt.
I ask ChatGPT to show me both questions and problems because “questions” gives you content ideas for very target and specific issues people are facing.
While asking ChatGPT for “problems” gives you more general issues people face within your industry.
Try it out.

If you’re an Ecom store,
You’re probably using shopping ads
So you probably know about the Google Merchant Centre (GMC)
You may even be familiar with their suspensions, and the disastrous effects they can have on your account.
Here’s to avoid GMC suspensions 👇
1. Become familiar with Google’s Policies
Yes, I know this sucks.
Nobody wants to read through pages and pages of policies that are exceedingly ambiguous and often unhelpful.
However, one page of those policies could be the difference between life and death in your GMC account.
So do the hard work.
Read the pages
-------------------------
2. Complete EVERYTHING on your website
Make sure that the site to which you’re sending your users is complete in every way, shape and form.
Some common things which I see missing from sites and can cause major issues are:
- Business address
- Phone number
- Policy pages
If you’re missing anything at all that could make your site look slightly more suspect, Google WILL find it, and they WILL disable your GMC
Once again, do the ugly work.
-------------------------
3. Make sure all of your GMC details are filled out (and consistent)
In the GMC, you need to make sure you fill in all of the details on the following pages under settings
Business Information
- About
- Website
Shipping and Returns
-Shipping
-Returns
Fill out all important details in these areas to make sure that you have given Google everything they need to verify your business
Finally, make sure EVERYTHING in these fields aligns with the info on your website
If you have any inconsistencies between the two, Google is going to hit you with the ban hammer
