Marie Corelli was one of Stratford-upon-Avon's most flamboyant & contentious personalities. She was the best-selling author of her day, eclipsing Charles Dickens, H.G. Wells & Wilkie Collins combined. Queen Victoria was a huge fan & insisted on being sent a copy of each new book.

“Who?” one might ask. Each was among the most popular novelists of Proust’s day. Now forgotten.

I'm reading 'Angel' by Elizabeth Taylor. It is tremendous: a sort of fictional biography of a monstrously vain lady writer who pens hugely popular but monstrously stupid, lush romantic novels, clearly based on e.g. Ethel Dell or Marie Corelli. Highly recommended - v funny

The Devil's Motor is a 1910 fantasy book by British novelist Marie Corelli that warns against the moral dangers of automobiles and rapid industrial progress.
The original binding for the novel is crimson cloth with gilt lettering and a decorative border of bat-winged wheels.
The following London sky scene is one of Arthur Severn’s six tipped-in color plates inside the 1910 Hodder & Stoughton edition of said novel.
It illustrates the opening description of the Devil’s car racing between Earth and Heaven.

It's absurd to claim that Conrad and Lawrence have fallen out of favour when they continue to be published after 100 years. Hall Caine and Marie Corelli were immensely popular contemporaries of theirs and they really have fallen out of favour.

In the Victorian era the most popular writer was not Dickens, Thackery or even Scott. It was Marie Corelli. She wrote spiritualist romances, kind of like the fantasy romances women read now but without the explicit sex.

334: The Sorrows of Satan - Marie Corelli (1895) Summary (7 min)
Rating: 3.94 ⭐️
Book at a glance: The Sorrows of Satan by Marie Corelli, first published in 1895, is a supernatural and moralistic novel often considered one of the first examples of popular horror fiction.
Set in a decadent and materialistic Victorian society, it explores the consequences of unchecked wealth, ambition, and the temptation of evil. Corelli, a bestselling author of her time, enjoyed immense popularity, but her works were often criticized for their heavy-handed morality and melodrama.
The Sorrows of Satan can be seen as a critique of the materialism and social corruption of the late 19th century, where the pursuit of wealth and status overshadows spiritual and moral values.
