There is absolutely no reason to distrust her reporting. She's a serious, credible journalist with a sterling track record. If she's reporting this story, it's because she has rock-solid sources to drawn upon. Meanwhile, Donald Trump is a pathological liar who loves the sound of his own voice. Of course he tried to make the 9/11 commemoration event about himself. But he also knows that Haberman's reporting makes him look absolutely awful and he can scarcely afford more bad press with his approval ratings in the toilet and the midterms right around the corner. As for his attack on Haberman, at this point, is anyone still surprised? This man is an avowed misogynist. He despises women and has a long history of making insulting comments about their appearances. We can't convince this man to be anything other than what he is. And he's already road-testing it. Hegseth recently campaigned publicly for a Republican congressional candidate at the Iowa State Fair — a state famously known as the first proving ground for presidential hopefuls. As Kube noted, "that is not what defense secretaries have done in the past." He also previously campaigned for the primary challenger who ultimately unseated Thomas Massie, one of the few Republicans willing to occasionally break from Trump. Let's be clear about what's actually happening here: a sitting Secretary of Defense, a role explicitly meant to remain above partisan politics, is functioning as an active political candidate-in-waiting while still running America's military. Kube didn't mince words, saying Hegseth "has politicized the role more so than any secretary of defense since... Donald Rumsfeld." Any comparison with Donald Rumsfeld, G.W. Under Defense Department statute, Hegseth is required to use U.S. military aircraft for ALL his travel — personal, official, or otherwise — which means every one of these political campaign stops is being flown on taxpayer-funded jets, with military personnel and staff along for the ride. American taxpayers are literally subsidizing Pete Hegseth's presidential campaign groundwork, whether they want to or not. Worth remembering: Hegseth has never held elected office in his life. Before becoming Defense Secretary, his primary qualification was hosting a weekend show on Fox News. Now he's testing 2028 messaging built around comments like his greatest hits about "no dudes in dresses" in the military — the same divisive rhetoric that's defined his tenure overseeing actual American troops, including the ones currently facing documented hunger and mental health crises aboard Navy ships he's largely dismissed as overblown. This is a man who's gutted civilian protection programs against the advice of every top commander, presided over a botched Iran war stretching nine months past its promised "few weeks," and pushed out generals for daring to investigate helicopter flybys of celebrity mansions. And now he wants to be president, using the military as his personal campaign shuttle to get there. If there’s any justice in this world, he won’t have a chance in hell!
