TL;DR: high latitude, marginal reefs are special places but not safe havens for corals under climate change. Climate change is real, by the way.

Not being able to move means that tropical corals are continuously threatened by the effects of climate change. Because high latitude corals are locally adapted to the marginal reefs, they are every bit as vulnerable too, as climate change changes marginal reef conditions also.

How do we know this? We sampled Pocillopora corals along the Kuroshio current, from the southern islands of Okinawa to Wakayama in mainland Japan. @MariaBeger @JDReimer @HirokiKISE @PalmasStephane @W_V_Hsiao @brig_sommer @domino_joyce (and many brilliant non X coauthors)

Are #corals moving to colder waters because of #climatechange? The answer is no, or not yet. High latitudes corals and their symbiotic algae friends have been there for quite a long time, and are different to the ones in tropical reefs link.springer.com/article/10…

Emjoyed a fantastic programme at Reef Conservation UK symposium with Manlin and Padmasini in London Zoo. Powerful presentations from many PhD students and my favourite talk was on place based conservation in the Lakshadweep islands

If we want Australians to be happy and healthy - I wonder if our best return on investment is in protected areas?
Visiting national parks not only makes people healthier, but reduces their medical costs. A study by @UniofAdelaide found that trips to metro national parks by people who live in Adelaide saved the SA health system $140 million per year. This is 50 times more than the cost of running the national parks. biodiversitycouncil.org.au/n… @AILA_National @envirosanews @ConservationSA

Fascinating work of @Ardiantiono et al. (2024), showing how local-language publications in Indonesia can illuminate long-term biodiversity trends. Local data, often overlooked, are essential to capture the full picture of regional ecosystem changes & conservation needs 🌏🦧
