Every city should have an @realEstateTrent that explains the real life in a city.
Last week, friends with young kids came to visit us from the suburbs in California. As we ran around Manhattan together, they looked at us and asked, “How do you do this all the time? How do you raise young kids in New York City? Do you have to get in the car every time you go somewhere? This seems crazy.” I smiled and told them that, for us, raising kids in the city is actually easier than raising them in the suburbs. We never think about getting in the car. The grocery store is two blocks away. The kids’ doctor is two blocks away. There’s a Barnes & Noble six minutes away on foot. We walk to the Met, the Natural History Museum, and Central Park. We walk to get coffee. There are playgrounds and playdates everywhere. Our building is full of kids their age, and so is our block. Once you get past the idea that raising kids in the city must be complicated, the day-to-day reality is pretty simple. We just walk out the door. And honestly, raising kids in the city is actually a whole lot easier than raising them in the suburbs.

I'm excited for the @USNavy’s planned investment in Bremerton to modernize the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard, a vital part of this community for over 100 years. Bremerton is home to one of just four public Navy shipyards.  This is a big win for jobs and the local economy. axios.com/local/seattle/2026…

Once again mentioning this thread. I find the evolution of multi sensor display systems via the F-4 fascinating and wish there was more information available.
The F-4E had three radar displays across its service life, as I mentioned before in my Phantom overview thread. I'm going to describe some aspects of them, with a strong focus on the last, the Digital Scan Converter Group.

An incredible labor of love over years to install markers for more than 3200 people buried from Western State Hosp. at Ft Steilacoom Park between 1879 and 1953. These folks were doctors, veterans, teachers and from all walks of life. We placed the last marker there on 10.10. 1/2

The Block Table panel on Monday, on the shifting media landscape in Seattle and what it means for how we process news in the city, turned out to be really candid and interesting. Our panelists were Melissa Davis from @SeaTimesOpinion, The Stranger (and The Onion) founder @timothykeck, and former @KUOW reporter and producer (and now my partner in podcasting crime) @hyded. It's now available for viewing on YouTube, courtesy of @SeattleChannel: youtu.be/ap_t4lY69eI?si=7juq…
For the next Block Table, on Oct. 19, we recruited an eclectic mix of smart journalistic voices to weigh in on how on how our media landscape has been evolving in this era of radical democratization of information flow, and what that means for how we see the Seattle...

The GRU hacked into Jared Kushner's iPhone. Dutch military intelligence (MIVD) then recruited a GRU spy who gave them access to the hacked phone. What MIVD discovered was that Kushner had access to two bank accounts --one Azerbaijani, the other Israeli --where Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and Emirati ruler Mohammed bin Zayed deposited money. It sounds like a slightly far-fetched episode of "Slow Horses," but it's real. And it proves just how eye-poppingly corrupt this administration was and continues to be as its "special envoy" decides the fate of tens of millions in Europe in the Middle East. Simply incredible reporting by Matthew Cole, drawn from his new book on Kushner. vanityfair.com/story/jared-k…

Oklahoma is advancing major building code reforms to unlock middle housing; 🪜 allow single-stair up to 4 stories, 🏘️ 4-unit homes can be built under the residential building code rather than the commercial code, 🧯scaling sprinkler requirements to small apartments.

As we expand and improve public transit — which must be a high priority at all levels of government — we also must lower the cost of these projects. Other countries have much lower costs. We need to make that happen in the U.S.
Being a transit advocate in America is hard because this is genuinely good news, but it costs $600 million a mile for a train that runs on the street. France is building fully automated, grade-separated metro for half that.

The 1996 Seattle SuperSonics weren’t just another team Jordan beat in the Finals. They were ELITE. 64–18. No. 1 seed in the West. 38–3 at home. No. 2 defense in the NBA. No. 2 in SRS. Gary Payton: DPOY + All-NBA. Shawn Kemp: All-NBA. Then came the playoffs: Swept Hakeem and the defending champion Rockets, 4–0. Beat the 60-win Stockton/Malone Jazz, 4–3. Won the Western Conference. And even after falling behind Chicago 3–0, they fought back to 3–2 before the 72-win Bulls finished them in Game 6. That wasn’t weak competition. That was a 64-win powerhouse running into a 72-win dynasty. There are levels to this.

Grateful for this level of support going to Dems. Amazing! But to everyone complaining about campaign spending: you plan and staff a race with zero money, then get hit with a tidal wave of cash in the final weeks that's almost impossible to spend efficiently. We should talk about this more!
