Iβve been considering lately why βBible-believingβ rather than βJesus followingβ seems to be the descriptor of choice for evangelical churches. I trust the Bible because I trust Jesus, not vice versa. If we are going to appeal to authority, shouldnβt it be to the highest?

10 simple facts about North Carolina/Helene:
1. Biden declared a national emergency on Friday
2. Biden declared a major disaster on Saturday, which means survivors can already apply for FEMA funds
3. There are 5,000+ national guardsman in North Carolina
4. The U.S. Coast Guard, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and U.S. Health and Human Services are all working throughout the region
5. Biden spoke to Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp (R) who said he got "everything he asked for" from POTUS in Georgia.
6. Gov. Roy Cooper (D) asked Biden, Harris and Trump to stay out until rescue missions were complete for obvious reasons
7. Local groups and orgs typically lead the immediate relief efforts; the feds support with $$ and additional resources but are rarely the first to respond (again, for obvious reasons)
8. FEMA & local groups are shipping in food and supplies via truck, plane, and even freaking mules!
9. FEMA search and rescue teams are on the ground and have been for days

This is spectacular. Right on the money. Whoever wrote this absolutely understands our popular culture.
Iβm struck by the inconsistency of the Trump-Vance campaign on cats. If they are the problematic symptom of childless women then why are they so outraged they are being eaten? Make it make sense!

I want to be gracious with Mike here but this post is really wrong and harmful.
First, he says Olympic opening ceremony was called "La Cène sur la scène sur la Seine" (French translation: The Last Supper on stage on the Seine.) Not sure where this rumor got started.
Why does the deconstruction of the Last Supper in the opening ceremonies matter?
Why should Christians care?
Because of this.
The name of the opening ceremony sequence was βLa CΓ¨ne sur la scΓ¨ne sur la Seineβ - which as @PageauJonathan pointed out yesterday, is a pun that reads plainly as a reference to the Last Supper. (Translating roughly as 'The Last Supper on the stage on the River Seine'.) The performers acknowledged this at the time, and I can only assume people are denying and backing away from it to avoid the backlash.
Dionysus was there because (again, credit to Pageauβs analysis) the scene was an invocation of Carnival β the contrast between the impulses of order and chaos, piety and indulgence. And the drama of the scene unfolded with the triumph of Bacchanalian chaos β including orgiastic dancing, the inversion of gender, the inclusion (centrality event of a young girl in the final act of the scene. Bacchus was the Paschal Lamb. A celebration of deconstruction.
βWho cares. The French are weird. Christians shouldnβt be so sensitive.β
Wrong. Because the revaluation of values dramatized in the opening ceremonies has real-world consequences. In this case, today, a biological male breaks a female athleteβs nose in competition and is rewarded for it by advancing to the next round. Think about it. In the name of sport, weβre rewarding violence by men against women. Weβre setting a standard that will almost surely, in many categories, crows biological women out of the games.
Itβs not just about blasphemy and respecting sacred symbols. Itβs about culture and civilization and norms that safeguard women and children.

Dear Wormwood
We managed a frenzy of attention from βThe Last Supperβ (a painting I despise and I refuse to understand) controversy during the Olympics. Well done. You incited, as planned, many so called βChristiansβ who think their βfaithβ is all about being offended by the world we control. The more we can agitate them, even to use violence and destructive means as a way to show grievances, the better. Mixing in our Bacchus feast to confuse them was your most brilliant touch. That will be written into our annals of most clever (uncreative) acts.
What was truly a delight to me, my dear Wormwood, was to see how this issue detracted from the actual competitions which requires so much discipline and training. Our Enemyβs playbook is filled with such allusions which we have tried to copy. But, as you know, we have yet to fully capitalize on what these athletes attain in discipline. This will require further research. You may think that the Enemy delights in seeing hard work and artistry, but we can also turn that spectacle into the device of ego for our purposes.
What our subjects call βthe artsβ are so full of potential and yet so dangerous for us! We need to make sure that artists are filled with anger, so much so that they forget that their gifts given to them can create works that are the most excruciatingly blinding to us. When I even think about the aforementioned work, I shudder and am filled with incomprehensible despair. Why is that? Well, it seems that when best of them practice their craft, they remind us of how high we used to fly, but now that we are earthbound (and subterranean), limited in our vista. The arts somehow makes us, yes even us, to long for such a world of splendor which we chose to leave behind.
Inciting to cause cultural havoc has been an easy playbook. Do not get used to using the same tricks. Keep them focused on the past glories to defend, rather than future hopes. You and I are not capable to see the future as they do. Artists can cause much trouble for us, and their gift, especially with discipline, is the hardest to tame. Yet, as youβve done many times successfully, artists are so easily tempted into despair with their open hearts. Artists see with the Light which blinds us, and are capable of creating a new vista which our minds cannot bear. Thatβs why we need to keep reminding them the impracticality of being an artist. It is impossible to be an artist (keep whispering that into their ears)! That lie has worked so well I wonder if they donβt realize that the Enemy is the only true Artist.
Your Affectionate Uncle,
Screwtape (2024 #theologyofmaking version)
followers of Jesus have a clearly prescribed response if/when we are mocked: Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an exampleβ¦.When he was reviled, he did not revile in return; when he suffered, he did not threaten, but continued entrusting himself to him who judges justly.
American evangelicals often make the mistake of assuming everything is about them. Wisdom says you wouldnβt worry so much what people think about you if you knew how seldom they did.
Despite my better judgement, I watched the 'Last Supper' clip from the opening ceremonies that everyone was outraged about.
One thing that was bugging me: "why tf is Bacchus in front of the Last Supper? That doesn't even make any sense."
I recalled a painting from my many art history studies in college called "The Feast of the Gods" by Jan Harmensz van Biljert which depicts the banquet of the Olympian gods, with Bacchus in the foreground and Apollo with a gold halo around his head in the center, painted in 1635.
There's even a child in this painting, which is one of the things so many were furious about.
So which is more likely - the committee wanted to give the middle finger to 2.4 billion Christians, which is suicide from a PR perspective, or they opted to leverage inspiration from a work which is relevant to the history of the Olympics themselves?
Now, the execution of this performance was a bit gaudy and not what I'd consider appropriate for the event, but everyone jumping to to Da Vinci based solely on composition (figures seated at a long table) and not the thematic elements of the work is honestly hilarious and pretty on-brand for social media.
That being said, can we focus on the athletes now, please? They've worked their whole lives for this and are being overshadowed by engagement-seeking dopamine junkies.

Hot take: a notable and famous painting of a biblical scene is not the biblical scene itself. And a parody of one is not necessarily a parody of both.
This is beautifully said and captures what has consciously oriented my life for the last 2-3 years but was emerging slowly for several before that as I have tried to live faithfully in these βunprecedentedβ times.
