Lithium demand is forecast to more than triple by 2050, which would require the equivalent of 134 new mines and more than $100 billion in investment, according to Benchmark Mineral Intelligence.
That is one new mine every two months for the next 24 years.
Demand would climb to nearly 7 million metric tons of lithium carbonate equivalent from 2.11 million this year, with each new mine averaging 36,000 metric tons of annual capacity.
Benchmark says the biggest challenge is sustaining that investment through price cycles, while competing for capital with AI, defense and the wider energy transition.

Curious what the equilibrium is here. If BEVs are 31% of exports and rising while total production stays depressed, ICE prolongation defends a shrinking segment with capital that could fund the powertrain transition.
Replying to @electricfelix
“You can recognise that the world has changed and plan for it, or you can encourage thousands of people to commit their lives to a false promise of the future.
The continual obsession of German officialdom with prolonging ICE manufacturing very much suggests the latter” 👌

🇶🇦🇺🇸 Qatar is lining up a second US LNG deal.
QatarEnergy is in advanced talks to buy at least 3m tonnes a year from Venture Global.
It came a day after it signed for 4m tonnes a year from Cheniere, running 2031 to 2054.
Venture Global was already its emergency supplier.
When Hormuz shut, QatarEnergy bought 33 spot cargoes of US LNG to keep customers supplied and most came from Venture Global.
Add both deals to its 70% stake in Golden Pass in Texas, and Qatar is building a US export portfolio of its own.
The world’s 2nd-largest LNG exporter is spreading its supply across both sides of the Atlantic.
🇺🇸 Cheniere ($LNG) just sold gas to Qatar🇶🇦
The 2nd-largest LNG exporter on earth signed two 23-year contracts to buy 4 million tonnes a year from Cheniere, 2 from Sabine Pass and 2 from Corpus Christi, FOB, Henry Hub plus a fixed fee, 2031 to 2054.
Qatar has 77 million tonnes of its own capacity and a plan for 142.
It needs molecules that do not pass through Hormuz.
7 months of force majeure taught QatarEnergy what its customers already knew: a portfolio with one exit is not a portfolio.
For Cheniere it means:
Part of the Sabine Pass volume is conditional on FID of the first expansion phase, Train 7, over 6 mtpa.
Bechtel already holds the EPC contract.
FID was guided for late 2026 or early 2027.
This makes it easier.
Fixed fee for 23 years from the most creditworthy buyer in the business.
No commodity risk on Cheniere’s side.
Corpus Christi Stage 4, 24 mtpa, sits in front of FERC with an answer requested by May 2027.
Every new SPA fills a train.
I bought Cheniere at $240.86.
It trades around $284, up about 18%.
Results on 29 October and the first question should be how many more of these are in the queue?
I am holding.
Qatar just told me why.

Does the 3-year timeline account for the storage refill? Yamal cargoes still land at Montoir-de-Bretagne, storage at 29% in March, 90% mandated by November, and Asian buyers outbid Europe for replacements. Would love to know the sourcing plan.
Parliament voted by a clear majority of 341 votes in favour, signalling strong support for the 3-year delay when negotiations on the final legal text start with EU member states.

👏
Consistent with the French experience. Flamanville went from €3.3B to €19B+. Barakah delivered four APR-1400s on budget because the buyer's balance sheet absorbed FOAK risk. IRP-style RFPs can't replicate that.

Globally, refineries are currently processing around 3.3 million barrels per day less than they were at the same time last year.
What we lost:
(-2.5 mb/d) Disruptions to refineries and difficulties exporting the diesel, gasoline, and jet fuel results in Middle East refinery runs lower.
(-1.1 mb/d) Disruptions to Russia's refinery operations as a result of Ukrainian attacks
(-1 mb/d) Reduced runs by Chinese refineries
On the flip side:
(+0.3 mb/d) U.S refiners have increased runs
(+1 mb/d) All other refineries in the ROW
But this still leaves us, on net, 3.3 million b/d short in terms of refinery runs.
Les obligations de consultation du Centre du patrimoine mondial me semblent réelles et le dossier doit les respecter. Mais chaque recours ajoute 18-36 mois au calendrier. Comment articuler cette protection avec les cibles éoliennes en mer de la PPE3 ?

Codelco is offering European customers a record premium of $350 a metric ton for 2027 copper, up more than 7% from $325 this year, two sources told Reuters.
Aurubis, Europe’s biggest copper smelter, raised its 2027 premium by around 10% to $347 a metric ton last week, also a record for the company.
Reuters reports the trend reflects expectations of shortages in Europe, which it links to expected US tariffs on copper imports.
Comex-approved warehouses in the US hold around 70% of the world’s visible copper stocks.
