So proud of our PGY4, @MaramaraTaylor on her presentation with Dr. Chu at the Annual Southern Surgical Association Meeting 👏. They presented “Adherence rates to ACOSOG Z011 based on Breast Cancer Subtypes”. They were accompanied by our program director, Dr. William Havron.

2) Residents are both the back of the house AND the front of the house crew. They provide the bulk of the exceptional bedside care and keep the wheels of the hospital turning 24/7 with ALL of the phone calls, paperwork, conversations, and procedures they do for our patients. 2/6

Medical interns will be starting their new careers this week. I think it's important for the public to know a few things about our new colleagues: 1) In teaching hospitals, we work as a team; interns ARE physicians who learn by watching, then doing, with graduated autonomy. 1/6

Over 50% of surgeons are reported to have complained of neck and back pain. Some have even called a surgeon's poor neck posture "the surgeon's hump" Here are 5 exercises that may help:

Anyone can be taught the skills to operate. What can't be taught is the desire to be in the OR, the confidence required to cut into a living human, and the humility to respect the things you cannot fix. Anyone can operate, but not all can become a surgeon.

We're too eager to bet on people who overestimate themselves—and too hesitant to invest in those who underestimate themselves. It's easier to build up confidence than to tear down arrogance. The people with the most potential are the ones who know they have a lot to learn.

It’s easy to be a critic or a cheerleader. It’s harder to be a coach. A critic sees your weaknesses and attacks your worst self. A cheerleader sees your strengths and celebrates your best self. A coach sees your potential and helps you become a better version of yourself.

Shielding students from uncomfortable ideas isn't education. It's groupthink. In healthy learning cultures, students are invited to take intellectual risks. They gain the courage to challenge each other's views—and their own. Silencing dissent is an enemy of critical thinking.
