Chair of the young people and work review, Alan Milburn explains why Britain needs a “rewiring” to prioritise job opportunities over payouts.

We’ve got too used to seeing people sleeping in doorways and outside stations.
It isn’t normal. And I won’t accept it.
Today, we’re announcing that everyone sleeping rough this winter will be offered a route off the streets if they need it.
We did it during the pandemic. We can do it again.
Let’s get everyone in for Christmas. Then let’s end rough sleeping for good.

Congratulations to everyone getting their GCSE results today, you should be proud of the work that got you here.
Whatever your results, remember there isn’t just one route to success.
We're creating more opportunities for young people to choose the path that's right for them, whether that's academic or technical.
Every young person should have the chance to fulfil their potential. I’ll make sure they do.

Jools documents how Professor Jason Arday was legitimately cleared of plagiarism with the main issue being poor referencing and The Spectator’s Lara Brown’s biased and anti DEI reporting on this.

60% of #electricity is still produced using fossil fuels, cars waste 66% of the fuel energy they consume. In moving toward net zero we should simultaneously be investing in #carboncapture & conversion into renewable fuel-synthetic hydrocarbons like Norway equinor.com/energy/northern-…
Heartening to hear your statements yesterday about immediate & continuing action on the climate crisis. Since last year 1000s of organisations across the UK have been hosting screenings & debates on the impact and solutions. #No10 can readily harness this momentum. @andyburnham

I know I’ve got work to do to win the trust of Britain’s farmers.
Today we’re putting £65m more into supporting farmers through this drought and preparing for the summers ahead.
They’re on the frontline of a changing climate and they shouldn’t be left to face it alone.
The ability to grow our own food is national security. I’ll treat it that way.
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
The £65m is reprioritised from Defra's existing farming budget, not new money from the Treasury. Total agricultural spending remains unchanged as funds are diverted from other departmental programmes. fwi.co.uk/news/burnham-a… defrafarming.blog.gov.uk/2026/08/15/new…
Can you even call them journalists?!! The British press is now a monolith, one massive braying mob, with no nuance, intelligence or integrity! #CampaignForRealJournalism

This evening, an Emergency Alert has been sent to people across England and Wales as the wildfire risk remains very high. The request came directly from Fire and Rescue Services.
I was in Stourbridge today and saw first-hand the devastating impact these fires have had on people’s homes and lives.
Our priority now is to keep everyone safe and prevent more fires from starting.
During this period of extreme heat, I’m asking everyone to take extra care. Please do not light any fires in gardens, the countryside or other open spaces, including parks, moorland and wooded areas.
Our firefighters and emergency responders are working around the clock in incredibly difficult conditions.
We can all help them. Please take the Emergency Alert seriously and follow the guidance in place.
Business, finance, retail management, marketing and communications need to be included in these priority subject areas also. We need to nurture and bolster the confidence & creativity of our next generation of entrepreneurs. @andyburnhamHQ
Andy Burnham announces that from 2028, GCSE students will have the option to pursue technical education.
The technical education courses will be tailored to local employment opportunities - such as manufacturing, construction, engineering or healthcare - and give students a pathway into local businesses in their chosen profession.
This is a great idea. And long overdue.

I'm used to people telling me things can't be done.
I didn't accept it then. I won't accept it now.
It's time to get Britain believing again and bring back hope.

Devastated to hear Kevin Keegan has passed away. A true great for Liverpool, for Newcastle, for England, and for everyone who loves the game.
Rest in peace, King Kev.
#FifaWorldCup I had been in favour of Tuchel’s tactical approach prior to semis, but that too soon to sit back & defend strategy was never gonna play against Argentina, who came back twice from behind to win with late goals in previous matches.Tuchel clearly not studying the form!
