A "botched execution" is one where the death is more slow/painful than intended.
This was not a botched execution. It was one that the state pussied out of.

A reminder that lethal injection should be scrapped, as a primary purpose is to medicalize (and thus sanitize) the act of execution.
If we are to have the practice, the death penalty should be carried out in a way that is more certain and honest (i.e., hanging or firing squad).
BREAKING: Tennessee death row inmate Christa Pike is still alive after 2 lethal injections, according to her lawyer.
At 8:26 p.m. local time, witnesses said executioners had "injected both syringes of lethal injection chemicals and Pike is still alive and snoring," her lawyers said.
Authorities appeared to give Pike two doses of pentobarbital, but she was still alive more than 40 minutes after the last dose. Officials then escorted media witnesses out of the area, and the Tennessee Department of Corrections said it was unable to immediately provide information about what happened.
The attempted execution comes after the Supreme Court vacated a last-minute stay that had temporarily spared Pike from becoming the first woman executed in Tennessee since the early 1800s.

The death penalty is one of the few issues where we see true radical centrism: one side is pro-execution, the other is anti-execution, so we compromise by waiting two decades and then doing half of an execution. Somehow everybody loses

This basically sums up my view of the matter well too.
The death penalty is one of the issues that I am most torn on both theologically and practically/politically. Here are my thoughts that I hold independently.
- the Catholic Church clearly used to treat it as permissible and that the state had the authority to use CP.
- Francis made some incredibly unclear and confusing remarks on this issue. It can’t be considered inherently evil and never permissible if the Church taught it was permissible earlier. If you accept both, then all teaching is arbitrary and open to change.
- I am open to the argument that it is no longer necessary in modern society as life in prison is an option. If protection of society was the biggest reason for permitting the death penalty, then that line of reasoning is pretty compelling.
- 30 years in prison, endless appeals and a lethal injection seems to me to be the worst possible way to do the death penalty if you are going to do it.
- a more just system would be much more expedient. The victims or their families would live to see justice done. It actually acts as a deterrent.
- I have yet to see a good explainer on why the lethal injection is actually more humane. I hate it. Even a firing squad would be better and more human imo.
-My least favorite group of people on the internet are people who have folded the death penalty under the “pro-life” terminology. It’s never been about that. It’s always been about abortion as far as that term goes. It’s sophistry and they know it.
