I prototyped a black anodised case for the SmartWatch a while ago. Since I'm planning to integrate the BLE/WiFi antenna in form of a slot loop antenna into the frame, I ran some tests and for some reason the black anodised enclosure seems much more lossy than the one without any color in the oxide layer. I'm not sure yet what the reason is. It seems unlikely to me that a slightly conductive i.e. lossy (maybe carbon based ink?) would result in such an effect. I will investigate contact resistance first and remove the black anodisation from one of the prototypes around the area of the slot antenna with high field strength next. Potentially the batch with the black anodisation was also manufactured with a different aluminium alloy...

I've finally gotten around to assembling this.
(I'm glad the datecode is on the other side of the PCB 🫥)

This is BlueSCSI v2. A SCSI multi-device emulator powered by a Raspberry Pi Pico 2W and an SD Card. This device is fantastic for retro machines that use SCSI hard drives; Macs, Amigas, and yes, the CMD HD for Commodore 8-bit computers.

Instead of trying to decode the parking sensor signals directly, I decided to replay captured signals and see how the display responds.
With some help from Codex and a few iterations, I figured out how the data is structured and managed to control the display from an ESP32.
With that figured out, decoding the data coming from the original controller became much easier.
I put everything into a library that can both read the controller data and control the display:
github.com/fbiego/ParkingSen…
Bought these cheap ultrasonic parking sensors and now I’m trying to reverse engineer the display protocol so I can swap it with a custom LCD.
Single wire communication, logic analyzer capture looks somewhat like Manchester encoding but no meaningful data yet.
So far:
• 1885 µs HIGH start
• 996 µs LOW
• 101/202 µs transitions after that
• ~64 edge changes
At this point I might just replay fake signals and see how the display responds.
