Corporate noblesse oblige, alms thrown to the poor at the whim and discretion of 21st century feudal 'nobles'...
We’re committing a portion of Anthropic’s shares to the Anthropic Public Benefit Fund, a new wholly owned entity dedicated entirely to the public benefit. It will start off with 5% of our shares. For every 50% increase in the company’s value over a set baseline, we can contribute up to an extra 2%, subject to our board’s discretion. In total, this means that roughly 20% of Anthropic’s shares are committed to the public good. Our co-founders have already pledged to donate 80% of their equity, and around half our employees are donating a portion of their equity as part of a donation matching program we’ve run since our founding. In the post below, we share more details about our new fund. anthropic.com/news/public-be…

It seems clear that the decision has already been made within the bowels of the British establishment that direct conflict with Russia will take place. Now it's about frightening the public into supporting the idea, or at the very least accepting it as inevitable. This is the march to WWI redux, and as then so now, much of what passes for the left in Britain will go along to get along to become willing participants in the patriot game. And such is the parlous state of life for our young working class men on our housing estates and schemes -- looking out at a future of no future at all -- the generals, the arms manufacturers, and the Eton wankers will have no shortage of willing pawns in their game. Lambs to the slaughter. They need this war. They need it in order to maintain control over a system that has create far more problems than it could ever solve. Eduardo Galeano said it best: 'The marketplace of fear requires a steady supply of monsters.' Putin's Russia is the monster being used to scare us now, like children being red a bedtime story. Back then our parents would tell us that if we were bad, the bogeyman will come. Now our supposed leaders are telling us that it's the Russians who will come, unless we obey. Russia is the enemy 'without' being used to try maintain control 'within'. It's not Putin or Russia they truly fear, it is us. They can feel the winds of discord blowing in their faces, and now it's about turning that discord into war fever. They lied to us about Yugoslavia. They lied to us about Iraq. They lied to us about Libya. They lied to us about Syria. They are lying to us now about Russia. Siegfried Sassoon reminds us that war is 'The hell where youth and laughter go.' The fight of our lives is upon us to prevent them sending the youth of our time into the same hell as the youth of Sassoon's time was sent. Never again.

🧵 I’m enormously grateful to Sally Rooney & I think what she’s done is to force the issue on Palestine Action in a way that has embarrassed the Government again & potentially forced them into a retreat. That’s how you use celebrity leverage. 1/9

This story is bigger than a book simply being cancelled. Penguin Random House pulled Alana Hadid and Jenan Matari’s book about the Palestinian experience after clashing with them over how to tell Palestine’s story. Apparently, even a children’s book about Palestine needs a disclaimer making sure everyone knows October 7 was illegal, while the Nakba, occupation and decades of dispossession are up for editorial debate. Alana and Jenin eventually walked away rather than publish a version they couldn’t stand behind. Imagine having to fight a publisher just to tell your own people’s story. Thankfully, Palestinian-owned Interlink Books will publish it in 2027.

"it feels like [your] entire body is shutting down; it feels like you are a few days from death." Yes, that's severe ME and it can happen to anyone, even Olympic athletes. No cure, no treatment, no specialist services, almost no research. The same horror story in every country.

With her lonely stand for Palestine, Sally Rooney has exposed the contemporary literary world as a nest of cowards and careerists Where are all the Doris Lessings, Harold Pinters, John Bergers, Graham Greenes, Samuel Becketts that once raised their voices against war and injustice? Rooney stands almost alone

When The Gates Of Tech Dystopia Snap Shut There’s a viral video clip showing a group of wild boars getting caught in a corral trap. When the gate snaps shut the poor animals run around in a panic, searching in vain for an exit. According to the caption that’s been going around, the trapper waited patiently for five days for the entire sounder to get comfortable enough to take the bait and enter the trap all at once. The gate didn’t close until the final pig walked into the enclosure. And, yeah. That’s pretty much where we’re at right now. We’ve been standing around munching on our bait, enjoying our bread and our circuses, blissfully unaware of the trapper who is patiently waiting for the perfect moment to slam the gate shut on us all. “Man, AI sure is great.” “Check it out, we’re all Miyazaki characters!” “I let ChatGPT choose my outfit for today!” “I wrote a song just by typing in a prompt! Can you believe it? I’m making music!” “We’re ALL artists now!” “Oh shit, the gate just closed!” “They’re listening to everything we say!” “Fuck, there are police drones everywhere!” “They’re putting guns on those robot dogs!” “The state AI canceled my digital money because I tried to start a union!” “I said Free Palestine and now I can’t access the internet!” They’ve been quietly constructing a cage around us this entire time in order to lock us into this capitalist dystopia forever. The oligarchs and empire managers have been rapidly developing technologies that will facilitate mass surveillance and autonomous weapons systems — already being field-tested in places like Gaza — which just so happen to be exactly what the ruling class would require in order to undermine and quash any revolutionary movements which might emerge in response to the ever-increasing abuses and inequalities of capitalism. The trapper is patiently pacing us into accepting mass surveillance, unfettered artificial intelligence advancement, militarized robots, police drones, digital currencies, propaganda, censorship, and the AI-assisted manipulation of the flow of information. And then, when the time is right, the gate will come crashing down. It’s essentially a race between revolution and high-tech totalitarianism. A race between the awakening of public consciousness to the urgent need for revolutionary change, and the ability of our rulers to prevent revolutionary change from ever occurring. A race between our ability to start using the power of our numbers to force an end to the abusive systems under which we live, and the ability of rich and powerful dominators to use surveillance, robotics and AI-assisted control mechanisms to nullify all the advantages we hold over them. And right now our biggest disadvantage is that most of us don’t even know we’re in this race. Our rulers know it, but the average member of the public does not. Most of us are still chewing on the bait in the trap. There is still time. The trap isn’t shut yet. But we need to awaken the other piggies in the pen to the reality of what the bastards have planned for us, and help them understand that the race is underway. Reading by Tim Foley:

The media’s absurd coverage of the RAF Fairford arrests is opening the public's eyes to the way reporting can quickly move away from the facts to promote the hidden agendas of the Britsh and US security establishments. Nonetheless, some may find the claim that the media in our “democratic” societies is not confrontational to, or at least distant from, the state hard to believe. Such an idea may be new to them. That should not be surprising. After all, how did each of us form our foundational view of the world – of who are the good guys, and who the bad – if not from spending a lifetime reading and watching media owned by billionaire-led corporations and the state? Since quitting the establishment media myself a quarter of a century ago (I worked for the Guardian), I have dedicated much of my time to identifying some of the most egregious examples of skewed journalism – reporting that consistently presents events in ways that serve not their audiences’ interests but those of the powerful: the corporations themselves; western security establishments; and Israel, the lynchpin of the West’s war industries. In such cases, the establishment media readily abandons even the pretence of neutral, fair or dispassionate reporting. It serves as little more than a propaganda factory. This has been all too visible in the coverage of Israel’s mass-slaughter in Gaza, a genocide that could not be named as such. It was visible in the coverage of Russia’s “unprovoked” invasion of Ukraine that had, in fact, been provoked by Nato for decades, as it expanded across Europe with a clear intention: either to corner Moscow militarily or drive it into a retaliatory attack on Ukraine that would provide an opportunity for the West to bleed Russia on a proxy battlefield. It was visible in the sustained media campaign of antisemitism smears against Jeremy Corbyn, that rarest, and most dangerous, of things: a leader of a major political party who promoted socialist policies for the benefit of the public, not billionaires, and was a vehement critic of Israel long before it showed its genocidal hand. It was visible too in the media pile-on against Julian Assange, whose Wikileaks whistleblower platform exposed British and US war crimes while also threatening to destroy the media’s top-down model. Having ridiculed him for claiming asylum in the Ecuadorean embassy for fear Washington would seek to extradite him for exposing its crimes, the media then treated his seizure by British police and incarceration for years in a high-security London prison, while the US sought his extradition for exposing its crimes, as entirely unremarkable, as barely worth reporting. I could go on and on. There is consistent pattern when the establishment media deals with the most important issues, the very ones in which our national security states are most invested. Then the media jettisons even the semblance of critical distance from the state. RAF Fairford is just the latest example of how, in such important moments, the media serves as nothing more than the security state’s loudspeaker. This is an extract from my latest article Reporting of the RAF Fairford arrests blows the idea of a ‘free press’ out of the water. Find a link to the rest in the reply post below ⬇️
