COURT UPDATE: FIVE POLICE OFFICERS GRANTED BAIL FOLLOWING COURT APPEARANCE FOR ALLEGED IMMIGRATION-RELATED OFFENCES @SAPoliceService Five South African Police Service (SAPS) members attached to Polokwane International Airport appeared before the Polokwane Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, 20 October 2026, facing charges of defeating the ends of justice and contravening Section 49 of the Immigration Act, 2002 (Act No. 13 of 2002). The matter was postponed to Friday, 30 November 2026 for further investigation. All five accused were granted bail of R1 000 each. The members were arrested on Monday, 19 October 2026, by the Provincial Anti-Corruption Unit, assisted by the Polokwane Tactical Response Team (TRT), following an extensive investigation into allegations that they facilitated the evasion of lawful immigration enforcement processes involving undocumented foreign nationals. The accused are Sergeant Monyebodi Joyce Matlala (48), Sergeant Makwena Emmanuel Manamela (49), Montsho Johannes Thole (44), Sergeant Congress Kwena Mothiba (44) and Sergeant Benjamin Nare Chokwe (50). The charges stem from an incident that occurred on 17 April 2025, when a traffic officer conducting duties along the N1 near Polokwane intercepted a 22-seater Mercedes-Benz minibus transporting 46 undocumented foreign nationals. The driver was arrested, and the vehicle was escorted to the Polokwane N1 Weighbridge for further processing. Upon arrival, all 46 occupants were confirmed to be undocumented foreign nationals, and SAPS members attached to Polokwane International Airport were summoned to assist. It is alleged that four male police officers and one female police officer arrived at the scene and informed the arresting traffic officer that arrangements had been made with the station commander to transport the undocumented foreign nationals to Polokwane Police Station for further processing. The officers subsequently left the scene with the foreign nationals. However, when the station commander and the arresting traffic officer followed up at Polokwane Police Station, neither the officers nor the foreign nationals could be located. The matter was referred to the Provincial Anti-Corruption Unit for further investigation. Following the investigation, the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) directed that the five implicated police officials be charged. The Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General JP Scheepers reiterated SAPS commitment to rooting out corruption and misconduct within ranks. "Police officers are expected to uphold the law and act with integrity, accountability and professionalism at all times. Any member implicated in criminal activities will be subjected to the appropriate legal processes," said Lieutenant General Scheepers. Police investigations are continuing.
