Since undergoing major surgery six weeks ago, my heart has been in atrial fibrillation (AF), meaning it has been beating irregularly ever since. Unfortunately, the medication I'm taking isn't working as intended, so it's looking increasingly likely that I'll need cardioversion to try to restore a normal heart rhythm. It's making recovery more challenging, particularly as I tire so easily. Perhaps this wizard I came across can work a little magic and cast a spell to get my heart beating to the right rhythm again!

Life for me, is enhanced by playfulness. Luckily, now I’m in my sixties, I feel I have permission to be that rather quirky older bloke. It’s also a way in which I continue to keep myself active, stretch myself and continue to explore the world around me.

Dosed up to the eyeballs, I managed a walk this morning. 2 weeks ago, surgeons told me an operation would be very risky given my medical CV. It's actually being active and keeping active that got me through it. Walking has saved the day again!

Resilience isn’t bouncing back. It’s the slow, painful & patient work of putting yourself back together piece by piece, day by day. This photo doesn't show the pneumonia I have, the pain I am in from surgery or how I struggle to lift anything. It does show I am not rolling over!

My latest life-saving operation and ICU admission reminds me once again that tomorrow is never a given. My wife, daughter and I had a heartbreaking last goodbye conversation together and that wasn't easy. But, I'm still here, not sure for how long as my medical issues are complex and my body has been through a lot. When you’ve said goodbye and somehow get the chance to say hello again, you realise just how precious being here really is.

Make no bones about it, I’m only here because of the extraordinary expertise of the professionals at Nottingham University Hospitals.
Throughout this journey, I’ve been incredibly fortunate to meet some outstanding practitioners - people at the very top of their game who have cared for me with skill, dedication and compassion when I’ve needed it most. There have been some very difficult days, but thanks to their expertise and care, I’m now back home and ready to begin what I know will be a long road to recovery. To everyone at NUH who has played a part in getting me here: thank you. You do remarkable work, and I will never take for granted what you have done for me.

I can't quite believe I have ended up in intensive care again but here I am. This time it is a perforated duodenum causing peritonitis. The magnificent staff at Nottingham NUH have saved my life for the 4th time and I couldn't wish for better care. Everyone has been superb.
