What distinguishes the 1% from the merely affluent? How about having a third child.
New post on a topic I've long been fascinated by (the economics and financing of having a third kid) where I finally felt bold enough to go into the latest SCF microdata to get a good answer. /1

The reason nice neighborhoods are nice is because they're full of nice people.
Using longitudinal data, we can see that they don't make people nice: moving into good or bad neighborhoods doesn't affect the risk of criminal offending.
But bad people tend to live in bad places.
Numbers look a little weird to me, but no, this is not a good thing
I'm still a classical liberal but,
the fact that people are burning town halls over the belief that *this* is not enough is an indictment of democracy tbh
The fact that I score 3rd%ile for lying in the general population, but 48th in the site is interesting.
Two possible explanations:
I. They are unusually honest (unlikely imo, given the scores on the cognitive tests)
II. Correlation with g and figuring out intention of question
I remember some woman on here explaining that the reason why women are anti nuclear is because they tend to think before answering, whereas men will answer without knowing things lmao

“Who did I rape?”
“Don’t act stupid right now.”
This woman thinks that Michael Tracey is the rapist! And he’s just taking phone calls from random women to talk about his rape.
This is so great.

Fortunately there is a vast empirical literature on the relationship between IQ and moral reasoning.
Here's one quote:
"More intelligent individuals exhibit higher levels of moral reasoning. In a review of the findings, Kohlberg (1984) estimated a correlation between the level of moral reasoning and intelligence at r = .30-.50. Rest (1979) made a similar estimate, and research consistently shows that intelligence is also predictive of moral action (Kohlberg & Candee, 1984; Ruffle & Tobol, 2015)."
[The DIT, the Defining Issues Test, is a standard test of moral reasoning. It's now widely used in LLM benchmarking, as you may well know.]

A convicted killer who sexually assaulted and killed one woman and choked a 15-year-old so severely that she was paralyzed and disabled for life has been granted day parole to attend law school at McGill University in Montreal while living in a halfway house despite "clinical assessments that ranked Ewert’s risk of reoffending as moderate to high." His parole petition was denied in 2022 but a court overrode it for failing to take into account his status as a person of native ancestry. Canadian law called the Gladue Principles explicitly dictate leniency to indigenous criminals.
His lawyer says "“He applied to McGill law with the help of many students, of law professors and McGill University was fully aware of his history and his status and where he comes from."

The idea that people are in danger of starving to death in the developed world has astonishing memetic power. Deaths from starvation are entirely the extremely old and the terminally ill. It is essentially impossible to starve if you have the desire to eat.

even if people weren't breaking anything, unfortunately more and more people would die of hunger and end up in poverty
what's happening is sad and not pretty, but if the gov mock peaceful protestants, and police beat them, it's no surprise that anger is rising dangerously

“I’m old. I’ve paid my home off,” said Ray Warner, a 72-year-old Akron resident. “Why would I pay property tax?”
Across the country, homeowners are asking the same question and revolting against property taxes at a scale not seen in a half century.

Paying property taxes in old age can be an extreme burden. To address this, we should learn from our neighbor to the North and provide the same solution. (MAID)
