North Carolina's Republican nominee for Senate District 22 posed in a niqab between the U.S. and state flags after switching from Democrat.

LaKeshia M. Alston ran unopposed for the GOP nomination in the Durham-based district and advanced automatically when no other Republican filed. Voting records show she cast ballots for Democrats in 2012 and as recently as 2024 before changing parties.

Her official candidate photo shows her in a black niqab covering all but her eyes. The Durham County Board of Elections posted the image before the filing deadline, then removed it amid backlash and added a second photo showing her face.

Alston told the Daily Caller she had "converted as a Republican" and signed emails with the phrase "Transforming the Masses." When asked about conservative principles she replied "I am down for ISIS," later clarifying she meant ICE.

Durham County GOP chair Christina Crosby said Alston could not articulate positions matching the Republican platform. The district voted 78 percent for Kamala Harris in 2024.

Her post brought to mind this clip of Van Jones from 2018, in which he praises the Trump administration for its efforts on criminal justice reform.
Guess who Van Jones said was trying to stop the reform efforts...Progressives.
Surely Hill thinks that the criminal justice system is racist. Also, surely she voted for Joe Biden in 2020, a man whose one signature accomplishment in 40 years was the mass incarceration of black men via the Biden Crime Bill.
Let’s just be honest here: Donald Trump has zero interest in improving the lives of Black folks in this country and has never been serious about helping our community.
In policy, deed, action and rhetoric, he has proven this repeatedly. Just last week, his administration launched an investigation into the programs Wells Fargo instituted a decade to increase Black home ownership. Does that sound like someone who is open to changing course about how he has treated our community?
His nonstop attack on DEI programs, federal budget cuts that had a disproportionate impact on Black federal workers, censorship of Black history or outright removal of Black historic figures, cuts to Medicaid, Medicare and SNAP — does any of that sound like someone who is willing to change their approach?
He got exactly what he wanted out of this dinner. He ran right to the media to brag about how much celebrities like him. He wanted to prove his power and how much people are dying to have access to him.
Congratulations, he did exactly that.

The same Obama who used the IRS against Tea Party groups, green-lit Crossfire Hurricane, and watched the DOJ chase Trump for years is now calling a court-approved search for immigration fraud “appalling.”
The warrant was signed by Magistrate Judge Matthew Sharbaugh — a Hillary Clinton donor who clerked for an Obama-appointed judge. Even he found probable cause.
Obama doesn’t get to write the weaponization playbook and then pretend he doesn’t recognize it when it points at his own side.

Gavin Newsom just found out the Constitution has a pecking order.
On Wednesday, the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals ruled that California cannot force federal immigration agents and other federal officers to wear visible ID while they do their jobs.
The law is called the "No Vigilantes Act." Newsom signed it in September 2025 as part of his resistance campaign against President Trump's immigration enforcement. It made it a crime for non-uniformed federal officers to work in California without displaying identification.
The court said no, and it wasn't close.
The ruling was unanimous. Three judges heard the case, and one of them was appointed by Barack Obama.
Judge Mark Bennett wrote that the law tries to "directly regulate the United States" in how it carries out its governmental functions. He also went further than the court did in April, when it first paused the law. In April the court said the federal government was likely to win. This time Bennett wrote that the United States is "certain to succeed."
Certain. Appeals courts rarely use that word.
California's main defense was that the law treats state and federal officers the same. The court rejected that argument too. Under the Supremacy Clause, states cannot directly regulate federal operations, even when they regulate their own officers the same way.
Newsom never seemed to grasp this. He may be auditioning for the White House, but he's a governor, and governors don't get to write the rulebook for federal law enforcement.
If California wants federal agents to wear visible ID, there's a way to get that. Convince Congress. That's how you change the way the federal government operates. A state can't pass its own criminal law and threaten to prosecute federal officers for doing their jobs.
The Founders saw this coming. In Federalist No. 44, James Madison warned that without federal supremacy, the country would be "a monster, in which the head was under the direction of the members."
Newsom tried to put the head under the direction of one of the members. Now a unanimous court told him no.
