“It’s been a journey” Shroff told @NBCNews. “I’ve spent my entire life trying to eradicate cancer, primarily pancreatic cancer, but also liver cancers.”

It has been a difficult week processing it all.
Rachna truly reflected the best of us & her
legacy will live on in the patients she cared for,
the trainees she mentored, the colleagues she
brought together & everyone she inspired
She always did what all stars do best…Shine
We join the oncology community in mourning the passing of Dr. Rachna T. Shroff, a renowned GI cancers expert and a dedicated ASCO volunteer. We are humbled by her dedication and strive to honor her legacy of commitment and altruism.

There is an especially outlandish conspiracy theory that oncologists are hiding the cure for cancer
Its proponents must think us particularly noble, then, when we sacrifice our lives to keep the secret: forgoing a panacea and succumbing to the very disease we treat
Dr. Shroff is not the only “wounded healer” I’ve known, but her legacy is far more than the wretched illness that claimed her own life too soon
She did her very best to push oncology forward, especially for patients with notoriously difficult-to-treat biliary tract cancers (a close relative, anatomically and sometimes pathophysiologically, to pancreatic adenocarcinoma)
I remember her incredible humility to stand at the podium at one of our largest scientific conferences and admit that a triplet therapy had not produced the benefits she had hoped for, allowing biological plausibility to cede to data yielded from the clinical trial she conceived & ran
Our field is full of such examples of good ideas failing to reach fruition, but we can only get better by admitting what’s not working as well as promoting true advances
When the history books are written, most, if not all chemo will look like grand folly, akin to our modern view of, say, blood-letting
But it is because of visionary physician-scientists like Rachna that we are making any progress at all: doing the best we can today while realizing there must be a better way and testing rigorously our ideas of how we might get there
May she be remembered in part for her tireless work, born out of irrepressible hope and true caring for her own patients as well as ones she never met (she never failed to kindly & helpfully answer a question I posed to her when I faced a management conundrum in her niche of cholangiocarcinoma)
RIP to a dear colleague (link in post below to a fund for young investigators named & bestowed in her honor)

It is with heavy hearts that we share that Dr. Rachna Shroff has passed away. A longtime partner of CCF, she has made tangible differences for patients and their families throughout her career. From being a valued member of our Science and Medical Advisory Board to helping build one of the nation's largest clinical and research programs in biliary tract cancer as a faculty member at MD Anderson Cancer Center, and as an empathetic and expert clinician, she made a difference in every facet.
Beyond her professional accomplishments, she brought fun everywhere she went. Whether she was quoting Beyoncé in a talk about clinical trials or getting us to throw our hands during her amazing Bollywood lesson, Rachna made us live in the moment and laugh, even in the hardest of times. Our hearts are with her family and friends in the days ahead and beyond.

Beyond devastating. Rachna was a friend to all oncologists, well known in @ASCO circles. We will all miss her. Her legacy lives on in the YIA endowed in her name.

Electronic health records and messages have a major impact on physician workload - though often invisible and underestimated. Report @JCOOP_ASCO show that every patient EHR messages leads to ~7 internal in-basket messages. Contribution to burnout?

1/ I was on the @FDAOncology ODAC for sotorasib, a KRAS G12Ci tested in NSCLC. We voted no, almost unanimously. A year later adagrasib + cetuximab got accelerated approval (AA) for colorectal cancer based on KRYSTAL-1.
KRYSTAL-10 was a phase 3 RCT testing that combo and just reported negative findings. Last week adagrasib came off the market.
I've already seen this called a failure of accelerated approval (AA). I'd argue the opposite.

Since daraxonrasib's FDA approval, I have enjoyed reading my mentor, Dr. Robert Mayer's words to @CancerHistProj about pancreatic cancer: decades of "swings, misses, foul balls, and finally a direct hit." That's what sustained NCI investment looks like: shorturl.at/sTItt

All of the negative comments about daraxonrasib center around how it’s not a “cure” for pancreatic cancer. For the longest time, we’ve dealt with a substandard therapy-chemotherapy; and watched our patients succumb to this awful disease. On RASolute302- not only did patients live longer and tolerate the therapy better than 2L chemo- they were also more likely to receive subsequent line therapy. That is indeed something to celebrate.
Most importantly- this isn’t THE cure we’ve been looking for but this is certainly the dawn of a new era that we’ve all been anticipating for so long. Every therapy has AEs and will need fine tuning and real world experience before it becomes more tolerable for the not-so-fit patients in clinic. Drug pricing is also not an issue unique to this drug-it is a systemic issue that needs addressing on multiple levels.
It’s so easy to be an “expert critic” for likes and engagement on social media and so hard to work towards moving the needle forward for patients.

Pancreatic cancer is notoriously hard to treat, but we are making progress. Recent @theNCI -funded work that sheds light on mechanisms behind #daraxonrasib resistance and could help clinicians choose treatment combos that outsmart pancreatic tumors. go.nih.gov/AcvCu95

Daraxonrasib’s approval also includes patients w/ metastatic pancreatic cancer who “aren’t candidates for multiagent systemic therapy.”
I’ve cared for many patients in this category. It’s a wonderful change to be able to offer them an effective therapy.
