I never could have predicted how my first week at Carnegie would unfold. The Eaton fire destroyed structures 2.5 km away from the Pasadena offices. Soot falls like rain, and hazardous smoke fills every office. An incomprehensible number of people have lost everything.

In the coming days and weeks, the best ways to provide support will become apparent. Although I'm still new, I have felt welcomed and supported by this community, and I want to express my deepest sympathy for those impacted by this tragedy.

I'm back with another new Milky Way satellite galaxy from the DELVE survey! Introducing Aquarius III: arxiv.org/abs/2410.00981. We argue it's interesting because of its cold velocity dispersion + orbit which keeps it far from the disk plane --> formed in a very-low-mass DM halo?

‼️GALAH DR4 IS LIVE ‼️ Huge congratulations to @astro_sven for the monumental effort required to make the DR4 dream a reality ✨ Globular cluster summary 🧵will be coming in a few days 💫
GALAH DR4 is now public! 10 years of observations, 995 nights (incl. rainy/snowy/cloudy ones), 32 elements (incl. nitrogen), 0.92 Mio. stars, 1.09 Mio. spectra, thanks to an amazing group of observers, engineers, and astronomers. Paper: arxiv.org/abs/2409.19858 with links to data.

In 1716, English astronomer Edmond Halley noted, "This is but a little Patch, but it shows itself to the naked Eye, when the Sky is serene and the Moon absent." Of course, M13 is now less modestly recognized as the Great Globular Cluster in Hercules, one of the brightest globular star clusters in the northern sky. Sharp telescopic views like this one reveal the spectacular cluster's hundreds of thousands of stars. At a distance of 25,000 light-years, the cluster stars crowd into a region 150 light-years in diameter. Approaching the cluster core, upwards of 100 stars could be contained in a cube just 3 light-years on a side. For comparison, the closest star to the Sun is over 4 light-years away. The deep, wide-field image also reveals distant background galaxies including NGC 6207 at the upper left, and faint, foreground Milky Way dust clouds known to some as integrated flux nebulae. A cool trick I recently learned is that if you synch your overleaf to a dropbox account, you can make local changes and have them mirrored in your overleaf repository automatically. Handy when no WIFI, and also allows you to edit files in neovim locally if you are one to do so.

Paper summary!!! On Monday, @astrobystrom and I put out this cool work: arxiv.org/abs/2408.17250 selecting red giants stars out to 100 kpc using the Pristine survey's data release 1 and Gaia XP catalogues. Here is a short summary of this long (sorry!) paper 🥳

It’s paper day! arxiv.org/abs/2408.13763 We characterise the local halo substructures (Thamnos and Sequoia) as part of the ChronoGal project by fitting their absolute colour-magnitude diagrams using CMDft.Gaia, obtaining age and metallicity distributions! 🌟

🚨 GAME CHANGER PAPER ON ARXIV 🚨 The wonderful Steph Monty has discovered that globular clusters trace the chemical evolution of their host galaxy 🌌 Looking at the accreted stars in the Milky Way, the accreted globular follow the same track 🤯 ( a 🧵) arxiv.org/abs/2405.08963

This is important for studying stellar nucleosynthesis ⚛️ supernova yields 🌟 and neutron star merger rates ✨ in the early Universe. And it works for more than just the Milky Way 😮 Look how well it fits the chemical evolution models for the Sgr dwarf ♐️

This opens a whole new world for analysing the chemical evolution of external galaxies through their globular cluster populations 🔭🤩 Steph is a phenomenally talented scientist and I'm so excited to be part of this research 🥰

Almost all black holes seem to come in two sizes: small or supermassive. But Hubble's on the hunt for elusive "medium" black holes. Intermediate-sized black holes (100 to 100,000 times the mass of our Sun) have long been theorized about: go.nasa.gov/4buKg00 ⬇️
