Just thinking back to the days of buying NME and Melody Maker every week and how exciting that connection to new music was. Inky fingers. Cutting out photos for the bedroom wall. Writers who were the word of god. Proper connection. Nice era to grow up in.

His writings on AI have been stunning in their humanity and clarity. We need him back to work as soon as possible.

The death penalty is inadmissible because it is an attack on the inviolability and dignity of the person. The common good can be safeguarded and the requirements of justice can be met without recourse to capital punishment: effective systems of detention have been developed that protect citizens while at the same time do not completely deprive those who are guilty of the possibility of redemption. #NoDeathPenalty

ChatGPT has now a big problem.
Researchers at Oxford and Cambridge exposed a massive threat to large language models.”
They call it “model collapse."
Internet ecosystem is rapidly changing, and generative AI will soon contribute much of the text found online. This forces us to consider what happens to future iterations like gpt-n when they are trained on data scraped from the web that was already generated by an llm.
According to the research, indiscriminately using model-generated content in training causes "irreversible defects" in the resulting ai. the model loses the "tails of the original content distribution." in other words, it begins to forget the creative, fringe, and unique nuances of actual human writing, collapsing into a repetitive echo chamber.
This isn't just a chatgpt issue.. the researchers built theoretical intuition showing this collapse is ubiquitous across learned generative models, occurring in large language models as well as in variational autoencoders and gaussian mixture models.
Tech companies rely on scraping the internet for large-scale data to build smarter models. However, the paper warns that if we want to sustain the benefits of training on web data, model collapse must be taken seriously.
Ultimate takeaway? data collected from genuine human interactions is going to become increasingly valuable in a web filled with ai content.

The RNLI issue might be the bleakest of UK issues. A LIFEBOAT charity. Doctors don’t check whether they approve of you before treating you. Firefighters don’t ask whether you deserve saving. The minute emergency help becomes conditional, we are in very VERY dark territory.

Something few have picked up from Channel 4 News’s undercover report on foreign funding for Reform: the contempt James Orr, Reform’s head of policy, shows for the Electoral Commission’s control over dodgy political funding. It’s ‘completely useless’, he says.

When Dolly Parton approached Robert Plant for permission to record her version of “Stairway to Heaven,” she reportedly worried about how he would react. Instead, Plant’s response was wonderfully simple: “Of course you can, you’re Dolly Parton.”
And somehow, that feels like the perfect answer. Dolly didn’t try to copy Led Zeppelin — she took one of rock’s most iconic songs and made it unmistakably her own, adding a touch of country, gospel, and her unmistakable voice.
Sometimes, a legend recognizing another legend is all the permission you need.

Keir’s made a huge contribution to the Labour Party and to our country. He’s a man of great integrity who has devoted much of his career to public service.
He's only the fifth Labour leader to have won a general election, which allowed him to put in place changes that will have a real and lasting impact on people’s lives, from strengthening renters’ rights and employment rights to expanding breakfast club provision.
These are meaningful changes which will improve the lives of people in London and across the country for years to come.
I wish Keir and his family my very best wishes for the future.

Bertrand Russell’s Ten Commandments of Critical Thinking and Democratic Decency
1. Do not feel absolutely certain of anything.
2. Do not think it worth while to proceed by concealing evidence, for the evidence is sure to come to light.
3. Never try to discourage thinking for you are sure to succeed.
4. When you meet with opposition, even if it should be from your husband or your children, endeavor to overcome it by argument and not by authority, for a victory dependent upon authority is unreal and illusory.
5. Have no respect for the authority of others, for there are always contrary authorities to be found.
6. Do not use power to suppress opinions you think pernicious, for if you do the opinions will suppress you.
7. Do not fear to be eccentric in opinion, for every opinion now accepted was once eccentric.
8. Find more pleasure in intelligent dissent than in passive agreement, for, if you value intelligence as you should, the former implies a deeper agreement than the latter.
9. Be scrupulously truthful, even if the truth is inconvenient, for it is more inconvenient when you try to conceal it.
10. Do not feel envious of the happiness of those who live in a fool’s paradise, for only a fool will think that it is happiness.

CAPITA Petition delivered to Downing Street.
PCS General Secretary Fran Heathcote was joined by retired PCS member Andrew Hoppit, PCS associate and Retired Members’ Association National Secretary Sandra Durkan, and Steve Thomas, Deputy General Secretary of Prospect, to hand in our petition calling for an end to the civil service pensions crisis and for pension administration to be brought back in-house.
More than 15,000 people have signed, sending a clear message that the crisis cannot continue.
Thousands of people have been left waiting for the pensions they’ve earned, while workers administering the scheme struggle with inadequate staffing, poor systems, and impossible workloads.
It’s time to bring pensions back in-house and put people before profit.

The world does not need an artificial intelligence that diminishes humanity; rather, it needs human intelligence enlightened by wisdom, political authority guided by conscience and technological innovation directed by charity. Only then will artificial intelligence become not a rival to humanity but a servant of the common good.
