LABOUR COUNCILLOR RESPONSIBLE FOR CHILDREN WALKS FREE WITH CAUTION AFTER BEING CAUGHT WITH INDECENT IMAGES A Labour councillor who was responsible for children, schools and families at Harrow Council was placed on the Sex Offenders Register after receiving a police caution for possessing indecent images of children. Brian Gate, who was 58 at the time, had previously served as the council’s cabinet member for children, schools and families, a position that placed him at the heart of decisions affecting young people across the London borough. Gate, a former councillor for West Harrow, was arrested at his home on 24 September on suspicion of possessing indecent images of children. Following his arrest, he was released on police bail while further enquiries were carried out. In January, Gate received a formal police caution for the offence and was required to register as a sex offender for two years. The case brought an end to his political career at Harrow Council, with Gate resigning from his position following his arrest. He also stepped down from his role as a governor at St Dominic’s College. Gate had held responsibility for children within the council's cabinet, having previously overseen schools and families following Labour's takeover of the authority. His responsibilities had included areas directly connected to the education and welfare of children across Harrow. At the time of the case, Gate was married to fellow councillor Ann Gate. The revelations attracted particular significance because of the senior position Gate had held overseeing services intended to support children and families.
