NEWS: Today Sen. @ossoff introduced the Access to Justice Act, major legislation to protect Georgians’ Constitutional right to an attorney. The bill would establish a public defender office in the Southern District of Georgia — which is 1 of only 3 Federal districts without one.

Senators who single out criminal defense work for criticism have it backwards: Representing people accused of crimes is the epitome of defending the Constitution & the rule of law without regard to personal beliefs - one of the most important skills of a judge.

The double-standard some senators use when criticizing public defenders is concerning. Criminal defense is mandated by the Bill of Rights. Even when it isn’t easy or their clients are unpopular, these lawyers stand for the rule of law. We need their voices on the bench.

Public defenders and criminal defense lawyers have been systematically under-represented among federal judges. Now that President Biden is trying to bring balance, they are being singled out for unfair criticism. We need to defend these public defenders.
