Our words are the most powerful things we have. Whether to hurt or to lift up. They are what separate us from every other thing on this planet. Words are powerful and they bring divinity to mortality. "Sticks and stones may break my bones but words will create the future."
Judi Dench was on Graham Norton last night to push her new book about her life and work with Shakespeare. After making the point we quote Shakespeare daily without knowing it, this happened:

There is no afterlife, no cosmic justice, and no inherent purpose. Consciousness ends at death in an indifferent universe that will outlast every human concern.

Smaller countries need to prepare for a dangerous world. They should look to Canada (and its prime minister) for an answer on what to do bit.ly/4zwKfVg Illustration: The Economist/Getty Images

last year I asked claude sonnet 4.6 for some parody songs about what it's like to be a claude. I gave one of them to opus 5.5 today and asked for a video. I have no words. there are 5 distinct styles used, and it's just incredible. Bohemian Tokenry:

The partnership is expected to be announced on September 16th 3. Short of EU membership, the EU and Canada want to "get as close as legally possible" 4. Canada was also the first country outside of the EU to join the EU’s $175 billion military procurement fund The trade war and AI are redefining global power dynamics.

I don't care if a data center purifies water, cuts taxes to zero, and brings the dodo back from extinction. I oppose it because I oppose generative AI, and since nobody will regulate AI, data centers are my only venue to put that opposition into practice.

Wait so you're saying that for just 3x the water use of a golf course we can create a ton of economic and intellectual activity that almost anyone can access?
Erin Brockovich: "An average golf course could use 500 million gallons a year. But these super AI data centers can go up to 1.5 billion gallons of water per year."
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
Extremely misleading. Both numbers are too high by a factor of ten. And all US data centers put together use less than half the water of golf courses. Water use for cooling is expected to reach 39 billion gallons in 2028, still less than is used for restaurant dishwashing. cbsnews.com/projects/2026/…

Trudeau won three elections, handed off power to a same-party successor, cut child poverty, and is now traveling the world with his cool pop star girlfriend. You may not like it but this is peak performance. slowboring.com/p/mark-carney…

Wasn't it beautiful runnin' wild 'til you fell asleep, Before the monsters caught up to you?
Happy Canada Day! 🇨🇦 When I was alone, walking north on the trail for months at a time, I had plenty of time to think about home. Every mile reminded me how fortunate I was to have grown up in Canada, and how grateful I was to be coming back. My dad arrived here as a refugee. My family built a life through hard work and the opportunities this country made possible. Canada isn't perfect, but it has given generations the chance to build something better. That's a promise worth protecting, and one we all have a responsibility to pass on. To me, Canada is at its best when everyone has the chance to belong and contribute. Whether your family has lived on this land since time immemorial, you arrived generations ago, or you came here seeking a new beginning, your story is part of our shared story. No matter where you came from, who you love, or how you worship, we are stronger when we choose to build a better future together. Happy Canada Day, Calgary. Happy Canada Day, Canada.
