More on Leys' solid'ish start plus some other statcast notes (I see you Alistair Tanner!) on the game:
- Leys touched 94.1 and sat 92.5, with 17" IVB.
- He generated 29% whiffs, with his slider (50%) the best at this, which he spun to 2262 rpm.
- HELLO 19YO Alistair Tanner, who the Tigers signed from Australia. Sat 94.3, touched 96.2 with huge 20” IVB. Spun all of his cutter, slider, and curve to around 2700 rpm.
- Crazy exit velo game: McDonald 114.2, Goodman 109.2, McCarthy 108.8, Ankeney 108.5.

Max Clark is handling matters — very well — ahead of his eventual shift to Detroit. First 2026 Tigers Minor League Report. open.substack.com/pub/tigers…
Eight games are not very predictive but the Tigers are:
- 4th-best in runs scored per game in the AL.
- 3rd-best in runs allowed per game in the AL.
Good combo.
Lakeland is going to be the place to be this year (and much love to TMLR for this video):
- Witherspoon averaged 96.1 and touched 98.1. He got 35% whiff, and spun his cutter to 2653 rpm and curve to 2728. Also no walks!
- Rainer smoked a ball 110.6.
- Rucker and Osorio each hit one 106.3.
- Tyler Owens showed up on rehab 95-97 and got 50% whiff.
- Tigers are targeting some guys with velo from other clubs. Inohan Paniagua (age 26, signed from winter ball) touched 96 and Yendy Gomez (age 22, minor league Rule 5 pick) got to 97.
Here’s Malachi Witherspoon’s full professional debut.

Tigers have scored in six innings today. They had scored in only nine different innings in their first seven games before this!

If you've been part of Opening Day in Detroit, there are memories. Here are a few since one guy's first Opening Day experience, an indelible afternoon even 51 years later. open.substack.com/pub/tigers…
Happy Opening Day!
Perusing the Tigers top-30 list, the placements jump out at me, especially how many are starting the year injured:
Injured - 10 (33%)
Lakeland - 6 (20%)
Toledo - 5 (17%)
Extended/Dominican - 4 (13%)
Erie - 2 (7%)
W. Michigan - 2 (7%)
Detroit - 1 (3%)

I just noticed the Lakeland rotation is (presumably):
Witherspoon
Jacobs
Leys
Grinsell
Wetwiska
That’s pretty studly.
A few statcast highlights from the Toledo game tonight:
- Clark hit a ball 111.3 (as well as two others 99.2 and 98.3). I guess the bat speed training worked this offseason.
- Wenceel hit one 111.6.
- Workman reminds us why we can't give up on his tools - EVs of 109.6, 106.0, 102.9, and 97.9.
- Rainey 20" IVB on a fastball up to 96.3 but 0/5 swing and miss on it.
- Woo-Suk Go got 58% whiff, mostly on offspeed (2/3 cutters, 2/2 curveballs, 2/2 splitters).
This is one of the bloodier season-opening Minor League injury reports I’ve seen. I get why they didn’t post it yesterday or I’d have thought it was an April Fools joke. Among the injuries:
- Burhenn TJ surgery.
- Dumesnil hamate surgery.
- Hamilton starting TJS ramp-up.
- Hamm shoulder again, starting ramp-up.
- Jimenez right shoulder after an eye-opening spring.
- Hao-Yu Lee rehab assignment tomorrow.
- Massey ramp-up after TJS.
- Miranda shoulder surgery.
- Oliveto toe fracture.
- Penney hamate surgery.
- Salcedo knee surgery.
- Sears broken left elbow.
- Wilson already throwing bullpens.
I've been looking into a McGonigle extension and how the Tigers could do it without going over the luxury tax threshold in 2026. I swear that you used to be able to sign a future-year extension without affecting the current-year CBT salary but if that once existed, it seems they've closed that loophole.
As near as I can tell, any extension McGonigle signs will push the Tigers over the CBT threshold, which would have significant ramifications:
1. They'd lose the competitive balance pick they've been getting in the draft (which they ironically used in 2023 to pick... Kevin McGonigle).
2-4. The picks they'd be awarded for losing Skubal, Mize, and Flaherty in free agency (if they're given qualifying offers) would move back significantly in the draft.
5. Their international bonus pool would be reduced.
That all has a real monetary cost. But they can't reasonably roll that cost into a McGonigle extension - he has no reason to absorb a loss to the Tigers that isn't his specific fault.
So what do they do? I'd still sign McGonigle to an extension (the Griffin extension we'll likely see in the next few days is going to be a perfect framework), take the hits to the draft for one year, and reset themselves under whatever new CBA eventually comes next year.
h/t to @ebajek85 for his formative work on this as well.
Quick Thread:
If you have watched any of Tigers 3B/SS Kevin McGonigle's early season ABs, you likely have been quite impressed.
With the help of Synergy Sports, a quick look at just how good he's been.
Here are all the pitches McGonigle has seen so far.
At the risk of being a pollyanna, I am not panicked so far:
- The Tigers three "best" hitters (Greene, Torkelson, and Carpenter) have been brutal. That won't last.
- Other guys have looked good early on (Keith, Dingler, Torres, obviously McGonigle, and Meadows at least looks like he won't be the disaster early spring foretold).
- They'll have guys over/underperform in the pen, that happens. They just need a little time to figure out who is who in the pecking order to elevate the most reliable guys in 2026.
- Skubal/Valdez are great hedges against any extended losing streak. No red flags with the other three starters yet (JV's stuff and velocity is fine, I think he'll figure it out).
- Not an excuse, but this team does not seem to like playing at altitude in Arizona. When their breaking stuff is more predictable closer to sea level, that should help.
