When Dolly Parton approached Robert Plant for permission to record her version of “Stairway to Heaven,” she reportedly worried about how he would react. Instead, Plant’s response was wonderfully simple: “Of course you can, you’re Dolly Parton.” And somehow, that feels like the perfect answer. Dolly didn’t try to copy Led Zeppelin — she took one of rock’s most iconic songs and made it unmistakably her own, adding a touch of country, gospel, and her unmistakable voice. Sometimes, a legend recognizing another legend is all the permission you need.

The line between fact and fiction becomes harder to distinguish by the day. I wrote a bit about that in the latest @BlackbirdStrat blog 👇🏻

I spend today in quiet contemplation… what are my goals and dreams for the year ahead? I try to be realistic and courageous, it’s a balancing act, given life’s challenges. In 2024, I achieved none of my resolutions. Yes, none. I did however, keep my head above water. Success! 😊

Name a sweeter voice than Karen Carpenter’s. Gen X were lucky to have heard, and loved, her.

Loblaw's new CEO was paid $22M for his first two months at work last year. November and December. But yes, it's the carbon tax.

Norice my old street. CityView Little League baseball and a lot of memories..swimming at Nameless outdoor pool. Biking to school École Laurier Carrière. The grand opening of Merivale Mall
Heading north on Woodroffe Avenue. Once again, the next few minutes are going to be a whole lot of waking past nothing. Once clear, I’ll run across Woodroffe Avenue. Just past the underpass, I’ll hang a right onto Norice Avenue to head back towards Merivale mall, where I parked.

In 1951, a year into the Korean War, Canadian troops from the Royal Canadian Regiment, Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry, and the Royal 22e Régiment were moved to a new stretch of the front lines that bordered on the American-held Hill 355. #ThrowbackThursday 1/5

Remembrance Day 2023 is going to be a bit different for me, and more so for another veteran. See, a few months ago, he was broke, jobless and homeless. He moves into an apartment on the 11th A thread of thanks 🧵

Ouf yes. Always remember bei g quizzed while doing full kit rucksack forced march about Mynarski Strret in CFB Rockcliffe and knowing this story due to a Riders Digest story. RIP Nous nous souviendrons CanLands promissed to retain some of the historical street names..
Andrew Mynarski gave his life in his efforts to save his friend, and he earned the Victoria Cross for his actions. This is his story. Andrew Mynarski was born on Oct. 14, 1916 in Winnipeg. In 1940 he joined the Royal Winnipeg Rifles before transferring over to the RCAF. He trained as an air-gunner and went overseas in January 1942. He was posted to the No. 419 Moose Squadron. On June 12, 1944, he was with his crew taking part in their 12th operation. After their successful mission, they were returning home when a Junkers Ju 88 fighter hit the plane's port engines and centre fuselage. With no port engines, the crew were ordered to bail out. Mynarski was about to go out the rear escape door when he saw tail gunner Pilot Officer Pat Brophy stuck in his turret. Rather than jump to safety, he went back into the flaming aircraft to save his friend. He tried to pry the turret doors open with a fire axe, and by beating it with his hands. With his flight suit and parachute on fire, he was told to bail by Brophy. Mynarski crawled through fire to the rear door, saluted and said "Good night, sir" as he jumped. Mynarski fell hard due to his damaged parachute, and had severe burns. He was rescued by a French farmer who took him to a German hospital where he died of severe burns. Amazingly, Brophy survived the crash in the air turret and eventually returned to England in September 1944. Brophy told the crew of Mynarski's efforts to save him. On Oct. 11, 1946, Mynarski was posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross. A junior high school in Winnipeg, a park in Alberta, a chain of three lakes in Manitoba and an RCAF squadron are named for Mynarski. A bust of Mynarski is part of the Valiants Memorial in Ottawa. A statue of Mynarski saluting was unveiled in 2005 at the bomber base in England where he served. Another statue is on display at Winnipeg's Vimy Ridge Memorial Park. A Heritage Minute was made about Mynarski and his heroic efforts: youtube.com/watch?v=e86HOBMO… If you enjoy my Canadian history content, you can donate at buymeacoffee.com/craigU
