The older brother never left home. He stayed. He worked. He followed the rules. He did everything he thought a good son was supposed to do. But when his younger brother came home and the father threw a celebration, something buried deep inside him came to the surface. Anger. Resentment. Comparison. Entitlement. He had been living in his father’s house, but he had lost his father’s heart. That may be one of the most sobering parts of the story of the prodigal son. You can do all the right things for all the wrong reasons. You can go to church, serve, give, know the Bible, and live a moral life while slowly allowing your heart to grow cold. You can be close to the Father’s house and still miss the Father’s heart. The younger brother was lost in rebellion. The older brother was lost in religion. One ran away from the father. The other stayed near him but never truly understood him. This Sunday morning, don’t just ask, “Am I doing the right things?” Ask a deeper question: “Is my heart becoming more like the Father’s?” Because following Jesus isn’t just about where you are. It’s about who you are becoming in Him.
