Jains are one of the smallest religious communities in India, but the principles we follow are anything but small.
Imagine building an entire way of life around ahimsa , not killing an animal just because you enjoy the taste of it, being conscious about what you eat, avoiding root vegetables, fasting, limiting food waste, and constantly thinking about the impact of your actions on other living beings.
And the funny part? We don’t even realise how extreme these principles sound until we explain them to someone who isn’t Jain. 😭
Paryushan comes and for 8 days, thousands of people willingly give up things they otherwise eat every day. No one is forcing them. No “reward” is being promised. It’s simply faith, discipline and self-control.
You can question our beliefs, call them extreme, or disagree with them , that’s completely fair.
But personally, if a religion teaches you to cause as little harm as possible to another living being, I’ll always have immense respect for it.
Jainism may be a minority by numbers.
