ALT The 2016 #RhodesMustFall movement was a catalyst for a global wave of protest targeting the symbols of slavery, colonialism and Empire. Statues of Cecil Rhodes, Edward Colston, James Cook and Robert E. Lee became foci of campaigns to remove memorials that celebrated the dehumanising actions perpetrated by the agents of European colonialism often physical, always ideological and cultural. There was an immediate back (white) lash that claimed amongst other things that the campaigns were anti-white, anti-western attempts to erase the historical record. This roundtable seeks to do three things: 1.Explore the impetus for the global movement and the responses to it, 2.Seek to understand the reasons people have for seeking the removal of the monuments or why others defend their preservation 3.Allow a discussion of the three different positions, removal, relabelling or protection of the monuments connected to colonialism The roundtable invites contributions from within the academic community
