I am so full of gratitude for what our campaign accomplished for South Florida. We built a popular movement and organizing infrastructure that will outlast one single campaign. Over 500 volunteers. Nearly 23,000 donors. Over 40,000 doors knocked and over 750,000 calls. 16,284 South Floridians who cast their votes for our campaign. Thank you to all of our volunteers, donors, voters, and everyone who believes South Florida is worth fighting for. We did this for the community and the people that we love, and we made the rest of the country take notice. It was an honor campaigning by @AngieNixon’s side in the homestretch of this primary campaign, and I am overjoyed that Floridians have chosen her as the Democratic nominee for United States Senate. A working class mom of five. A union organizer. And yes, a democratic socialist. Her victory has buoyed my spirit and so many among our campaign tonight. Our movement has never been about one person or one election. It is about building a popular mass movement for the issues that make a material difference in people’s lives: Medicare for All. A living wage of $25 an hour. Universal childcare. Paid family and medical leave. Free college. A Green New Deal. Abolishing ICE. Abolishing college loan and medical debt. Affordable housing. Unions for all. Ending U.S. military aid for genocide, apartheid, and war crimes so we can invest our taxpayer dollars in our communities where they belong. I am so proud of what we’ve accomplished, and I don’t feel an ounce of regret. This campaign has changed my life. Thank you @BrowardDSA, @MiamiDSA, @PalmBeachDSA, and @DemSocialists across America. Thank you to all of our endorsers—the organizations, unions, and individuals who lent our campaign your support and solidarity. Challenging entrenched power is never easy. I hope we honored your support with the disciplined and vigorous campaign that made your investments of time, energy, resources, and political capital worthwhile. Earlier this evening, I called Rep. Moskowitz to congratulate him on his renomination and shared my support to keep FL-25 blue in November to help win a Democratic House majority and remove Mike Johnson as House Speaker. Our points of disagreement are strong, but my desire to keep this seat out of Scott Singer’s hands is stronger. I hope our nominee will do what is necessary to welcome our coalition into his campaign to earn every Democratic vote possible. Florida has an opportunity to make history in November when we send the incredible Angie Nixon to the U.S. Senate, and I look forward to spending the days between now and November 3 working to make that happen. She is truly an inspiration. The work has only just begun. Before I was a candidate for Congress, I was a volunteer, an organizer, an activist. And someday, the seeds our campaign planted will blossom with a new generation of candidates grown from the ranks of the grassroots organization we’ve built. Thank you from the bottom of my heart to everyone who shared our belief that Florida is not a punchline, but a place full of working class people who are deserving of dignity, respect, and representation. We will draw from this deep well of love in the months ahead for our strength and nourishment as we move ahead to transform our state and the United States of America. Solidarity forever. There has been a very unfortunate and deliberate smear campaign of political intimidation from elements within the Florida Democratic Party throughout this campaign that we have kept under wraps, because I don’t believe the actions of a few hateful individuals are representative of the party as a whole. But now that the DPCF has made this statement—yes, our paid sponsorship of the Democratic LBGTQ+ Caucus annual conference was met with a smear on the caucus website. I did not publicize this because the caucus president took swift action to remove the post and personally apologize with genuine remorse. I am a staunch ally of the LGBTQ+ community, I don’t believe the individual responsible for the website sponsorship updates represents the views of the caucus as a whole, and I did not want to take action that would reflect negatively upon the caucus. And yes, two state committee members told Bernard Taylor and I to “shut the f*** up” at Leadership Blue as we were speaking privately about which college campuses are within our respective congressional districts. I don’t believe it’s a coincidence that it was two older white members saying that to a Black candidate. The FDP has an anti-Black racism problem. It has an Islamophobia problem. And it appears to have a problem with the exercise of democracy in party primaries. This concerted campaign to smear and intimidate progressive candidates for standing up for human rights and a foreign policy that abides by US and international law is reprehensible coming from a party that purports to support progressive causes. I’m sharing this now to make clear these tactics are unacceptable—from character assassination in official FDP materials to attempts to cancel a GOTV rally against the very spirit of the First Amendment. The people of Florida deserve better than this. Solidarity with @BTForCongress @AngieNixon @iElijahManley and our amazing slate of progressive candidates.
