Queering the Constitution… Watch this space!
UNFAIR DISCRIMINATION BASED ON SEXUAL ORIENTATION: Queer people were told they did not belong.
We come from a history where people's personal and private choices were politicised, and the State unfairly intruded into the lives of queer people. Their private lives were criminalised, and they were denied belonging and acceptance in society.
The right to equality is protected in the Bill of Rights in Section 9 of the Constitution. This right requires the State to take measures to protect an individual, group or community's identity as being worthy of respect within society. Conduct is only unfairly discriminatory if it is proven that such conduct amounts to preferential treatment or benefits unequally given, based on one of the prohibited grounds listed in section 9(3), including the grounds of sexual orientation, marital status, belief and religion.

In Johannesburg, two teenagers are going head to head for the title of Junior Mayor – all while navigating high school and trying to live a normal teenage life. To win votes, they organize food drives and neighborhood cleanups. But it all comes down to the big debate, which pushes them well beyond their comfort zones.

An angry mob was mobilised, on the back of a coordinated disinformation campaign, to commit public violence on the grounds of our apex court. Nothing will happen to the people who stoked these fires. Rinse and repeat.
March and March leader Jacinta Ngobese-Zuma and her husband, Xolani Zuma, have received millions through government contracts since 2021 – this amid the organisation’s attacks on the state about immigration laws and regulations.

One month before an election, accounts here suddenly claim that asylum seekers can vote. This is a lie. it is designed to undermine the election. You are being played. Just like last time, when MK made up that the election was rig, and never ever proved it, because it wasn't

Our national anthem is actually two songs joined into one. "Nkosi Sikelel' iAfrika" and "Die Stem van Suid-Afrika" were merged after 1994 and made official under Section 4 of the Constitution in 1997. Every time we sing it, we're singing the compromise that ended apartheid and built a shared nation.

🇿🇦 Our heritage. Our inheritance. Our Constitution.
South Africa belongs to all who live in it, united in our diversity.
Our Constitution protects our right to use the language of our choice and participate in the cultural life of our choice - affirming that our diversity is something to celebrate, protect and pass on.
This Heritage Day, let’s honour what we have inherited and build a constitutional democracy worthy of future generations.

Saturdays are for the Constitutional Literacy.

Episode 5: Women's Rights and Participation
The South African Constitution is one of the world's most progressive constitutions on gender equality, but these rights were not granted but fought for by women across South African history.
In 1994, women made up 27.7% of South Africa's first democratic Parliament, more than double the global average at the time. Working across party lines, women in the Constitutional Assembly played a pivotal role in ensuring that equality, dignity, non-sexism and non-discrimination became cornerstones of the South African Constitution.
In this episode of the #490Project, we explore the contributions of the women who helped shape our democracy and the lasting impact of their work on the rights we enjoy today. Featured in this episode are Former Deputy President Baleka Mbete, Former Minister Brigitte Mabandla, Former MP Nozuko Majola-Pikoli, Louisa Zondo, Minister Patricia de Lille, Professor Sandra Liebenberg, Former Ambassador Sheila Camerer, and Former Deputy Minister Nozizwe Madlala-Routledge,

Apartheid is a crime against humanity.
In South Africa, apartheid was not only about race. It was also a system that entrenched discrimination and inequality based on gender.
That is why our Constitution names non-racism AND non-sexism as foundational values of our democratic society.
This Women’s Month, we were honoured to welcome Malala Yousafzai, Malala Fund, and courageous women from Afghanistan to Constitution Hill.
We shared a story that connects us across generations and borders: South African women fought against oppression, challenged gender apartheid, and helped build a Constitution that protects the rights of women and girls today.
But the fight for equality does not end with one victory.
We stand in solidarity with the women and girls of Afghanistan who continue to resist gender apartheid and demand their fundamental rights and freedoms.
We fought. We won. And we will stand with you until you win too.
