Really cool moment at the gym today. Just as I finish my workout a young man walks up to me so nervous he was literally shaking and asks, “A-A-Are you Joey Swoll?”. I put my hand on his shoulder to calm him and say yes and ask his name. “M-M-Michael”, he says. I say nice to meet you Michael and shake his hand. He asks, “C-C-Can I take a photo with you?” and of course I say yes. I ask him what he’s training today and he says “back”. I tell him to have a great back workout and that it was great to meet him. Just then, still shaking, he tells me he’s having trouble hitting his lower lats and asks for any advice I have. My eyes light up and I smile as I say, “Come with me Michael”.
I took him over to the cables and showed him how to do lat pullovers with the rope, one of my favorite exercises for lower lats. I do a few sets with him, correct his form, and stay with him until he gets it right. After about 5 minutes, so excited with the biggest smile on his face, he says, “I can feel it!”.
These are the moments I live for, just 5 minutes to make this young man’s day and in all honesty, to make mine too. I love being able to share my passion and knowledge for the gym with others as well as leave them with a great memory. Michael, if you see this, thank you for giving me an amazing moment today at the gym reminding me that I have purpose and I impact people’s lives. I needed it more than you know brother.
