Beer throwing seems a national sport at times. Ball, net, beer, air. It would be unwise of clubs to allow their stadia’s stands on match-days to be used for this new national sport. Unless you have a designated drinking/beer-throwing section - hard in packed PL grounds - it is hard to see how drinking alcohol in the stands will be universally welcomed. Issues of faith. Issues of not wanting to be showered in beer. Utter soak nonsense.
Issues of VAR complicating timing of these lager launches. Issues of drinkers bearing trays returning to their seats, distracting everyone in their row from the game. Excuse me, excuse me. Spillage.
Issues of a few minutes later the return run with an empty tray and full bladder. There are enough interruptions in the game anyway. And stewards are often busy enough without dealing with the occasional over-imbiber.
English football has changed and the trouble on the terraces has largely disappeared. The concern over the return of drinking in the stands is less the consumption but the projection. The PM is right to consider ways of helping clubs wanting to maximise revenue - and alcohol sales is one way. But the complications are considerable. It’s a hangover English football doesn’t need.
And ending the ban could impact local pubs - many of which have been under threat. British Beer and Pub Association claims that almost two a day are going out of business (161 in first quarter of 2026 inc 2,600 jobs).
Football has bigger issues than debating repealing the booze ban.

Farewell Cricket Season 2025
Thanks for your engagement this season. Off home now to spend a few days on stats!!!
Before I go, I post this image as a reminder that above all else, this is what cricket is about.
Not reviews and arguments and disputes and disagreements and money and all the other distracting stuff - no, our game is surely about putting smiles on the faces of all our participants, on and off the pitch.
Keep on smiling!!!

Thought @dcfcofficial were as impressive as their raucous travelling fans today, apart from a little wobble after @WBA pulled one back 2nd half. Strength at set pieces brought them 2 early goals, brilliant save by Vickers just before half time crucial. Resolute in defence.
