The California Department of Public Health (CDPH) is working with local public health officials and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to investigate the cause of the initial positive test in the child. The positive test showed a low-level detection of the virus, indicating the child was not likely infectious to others. Repeat bird flu testing on the child four days later was negative, and additional testing shows the child was also positive for respiratory viruses that could be the cause of their cold and flu symptoms. All 57 people have been hospitalized and 8 deaths have now been reported. The 5 new deaths include one from Florida, one from Tennessee, one from New Mexico, and two from South Carolina. This is the largest listeriosis outbreak since the 2011 outbreak linked to cantaloupe. Everyone should check their homes for any remaining recalled Boar's Head products since they can have long a shelf-life. Look for "EST. 12612" or "P-12612" inside the USDA mark of inspection on the product labels. Some of the products have sell by dates into October 2024. Listeria is a hardy germ that can remain on surfaces, like meat slicers, and foods, even at refrigerated temperatures

Epidemiologic Data Since the last update on July 31, nine more illnesses have been reported. As of August 8, a total of 43 people infected with the outbreak strain of Listeria have been reported from 13 states (see map). The patient reported upper respiratory tract symptoms including cough without fever, and eye discomfort with watery discharge. The patient was given antiviral treatment with oseltamivir, is isolating at home, and their symptoms are resolving. Household contacts of the patient have not developed symptoms, are being monitored for illness, and have been offered oseltamivir. No other workers at the same farm have reported symptoms, and all staff are being monitored. There is no indication of person-toperson spread of A(H5N1) viruses at this time. Specimens were collected from the patient; one of which was positive for influenza A(H5) virus using the CDC test at the state health department laboratory.
