Fresh from Taiz in central #Yemen, I joined @ConflictedThom on @MHconflicted to tell the story of a city besieged by the Houthis that still rejects their rule. Daily shelling, sniper fire, and a young girl in an IDP camp who dreams of becoming a lawyer. From history to the current conflict, a city that refuses to surrender 👇 podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcas…

After my recent trip to Taiz in central #Yemen, I'm back on @MHconflicted with @ConflictedThom to tell the story of a city that has fought valiantly against a Houthi siege. Taiz still rejecting Houthi theocratic rule and staying true to its republican ideals. A city that refuses to surrender 👇 conflicted.supportingcast.fm…

🔴 I believe this is the most important 10-minute clip on the Houthi militia, produced by @BShtwtr, a London-based associate fellow at @RUSI_org. "The Houthis: Born in the mountains of Saada. Shaped by Hezbollah operatives. Now Iran's most defiant ally."

Last month, I told the @MHconflicted podcast that even if the Houthis were to capture all of Yemen, the internationally recognized government collapsed, and the national army disintegrated, armed local resistance and opposition to Houthi rule would continue. Today's footage from Yafrus, a historic town and subdistrict in Jabal Habashi, Taiz governorate, illustrates that point. The video reportedly shows local defenders ambushing a Houthi technical. The Houthis may capture territory, dismantle military formations, and seize government institutions, but that does not necessarily translate into control over the population or an end to armed resistance. This is shaping up to be a grueling, protracted conflict, not a short campaign ending in a quick, decisive victory. Even if the Houthis achieve conventional military superiority, they could face years of decentralized armed resistance, local insurgencies, and persistent opposition across Yemen. Winning territory is one thing. Holding it, governing it, and securing the acceptance of the population is an entirely different challenge.
After years of avoiding podcasts and long-form interviews, I finally gave in. I joined the @MHconflicted podcast with Thomas Small @ConflictedThom for a frank and tough conversation examining the forces reshaping Yemen and the wider region. @Spotify: open.spotify.com/episode/0H0… @Apple: podcasts.apple.com/us/podcas…

Was a GREAT episode! I agreed that Yemeni forces shouldn't have to rely on Saudi Support so heavily and just be competent.

Sudan’s civil war has become a regional proxy struggle, with the UAE, Egypt, Iran, Turkey and other powers backing rival armed camps as the country fragments under the pressure of war. But while the RSF’s foreign support has drawn intense scrutiny, the forces sustaining Sudan’s army - from Islamist networks to drones, money and weapons supplied from abroad - have received far less attention. Aimen and Thomas discuss: Why Sudan has become everyone’s proxy war The UAE, the RSF - and the case against the usual narrative Who is really backing Burhan’s army? How the Muslim Brotherhood returned through Sudan’s war Iran, Turkey and the drone war changing the battlefield The hidden regional contest between Egypt and Ethiopia Did Sudan’s army use chemical weapons? Can the outside powers stop the war they helped sustain? podcasts.apple.com/ae/podcas…

Multiple senior Iranian officials have made several threats over the past 12 days, warning that if Iranian planes can’t fly, then no one in the region will fly! Then, an Emirati 🇦🇪 plane flying over Saudi Arabia 🇸🇦 with dozens of Israeli 🇮🇱 passengers on board was almost hijacked and crashed by a rogue pilot. This is NOT a coincidence!
