"As the person everyone turned to, I was afraid to ask for help...
There are days (like today) when I'm stuck in the office until 7:42 PM, wondering how one person is supposed to keep up with everything that comes with managing a medical practice.
Staffing challenges, provider pay, delayed supplies, organizational pressure, office drama, and a never-ending list of things that need attention.
Some days, I spend so much time putting out fires that I barely get to the work I actually planned to do.
And the hardest part? Feeling like I'm supposed to have all the answers.
I've been in this field long enough to know that experience doesn't mean you stop running into situations you haven't faced before. There's always a new challenge, a difficult conversation, or a decision that doesn't have an obvious right answer.
For a while, I thought being a good practice manager meant figuring those things out on my own.
But I've learned that having people to turn to makes a real difference.
That's one of the things I've appreciated most about being a Medical Group Management Association (MGMA) member.
Sometimes I need a resource to help me work through an operational challenge. Other times, I just want to hear how another practice is handling something we're dealing with, too.
And sometimes, it's simply reassuring to talk to someone who understands why a staffing callout can change your entire day.
MGMA hasn't made the challenges of practice management disappear. I still have stressful days, difficult decisions, and plenty of things on my to-do list.
But I feel better equipped to navigate them.
I've gained access to education, data, and resources that help me do my job, and I've connected with people who understand the realities of this work.
If there's one thing I've learned, it's that being a strong leader doesn't mean having every answer.
Sometimes it means knowing where to turn when you don't.
And for me, having that support has made all the difference."
