Yesterday, we testified before the Senate Budget & Tax committee in support of SB784, the Comprehensive Community Safety Funding Act. It's time to address the economic reality of gun violence in Maryland. #SB784 #GunViolenceCosts

Young people did this. Last Friday, @POTUS held a ceremony at the #WhiteHouse for the creation of the Office of Gun Violence Prevention; a huge breakthrough to help tackle the complex and vast issue of ending gun violence in the U.S.

There were 10 shooting deaths and 22 non-fatal shooting injuries in Maryland during the week of August 28-September 3. We #SayTheirNames, offer our deepest condolences to their loved ones, and recommit ourselves to the cause of ending gun violence.

Today many of us are stepping into another school year. New textbooks, new outfits, new goals. But the same familiar fear of violence lingers. It’s with us every year, and it won’t go away until we fix this gun obsessed culture & backwards laws. Safety is the least we’re owed.

Today there was a tragic shooting outside Mervo during regular dismissal. One of our students was taken to a hospital where they succumbed to their injuries. Our thoughts are with the family & Mervo community. We will have counselors at the school next week for students & staff.

Patti Davis, whose father, President Reagan, nearly died at the hands of a gunman, talks in personal terms about how obscene levels of gun violence create a regime of fear destructive of freedom and democracy. nytimes.com/2022/07/05/opini…

Opinion | How Gun Violence Changed My Father, Ronald Reagan, and Our Family (Published 2022)

There are people in America who want the rest of us to be afraid. History shows that every democracy that has crumbled did so in an atmosphere of fear.

Governor Hogan fails to see the danger that this presents even when multiple mass shootings prove him wrong. He can either take gun violence seriously or leave Marylanders in danger.
Governor Larry Hogan

In light of a recent Supreme Court ruling and to ensure compliance with the Constitution, I am directing the Maryland State Police to suspend utilization of the ‘good and substantial reason’ standard when reviewing applications for Wear and Carry Permits. My full statement:

Still feeling stunned that @LarryHogan felt like the day after this ⬇️ was the appropriate time to open up Maryland's public carry system to allow more guns in public spaces.

It's only a matter of time before this violence touches every community in America. Last month, Highland Park marched with us. Meanwhile, this evil plan to steal life was already in the works. The next shooter is planning his attack RIGHT NOW. This is reality, not exaggeration!

The alleged Highland Park shooter had a music video fantasizing about what appears to be a school shooting on YouTube. The video has 42,000 views and has been up for a year. These things are never a total surprise.

Over 100 people will probably die from gun violence today, and 200 more will survive being shot. It doesn’t have to be this way. #MarchForOurLives
