Last year saw an increase in the number of doctors practicing in the UK, with more than two thirds of those joining the register having qualified abroad. This means that many doctors will not only be adjusting to UK practice, but also navigating a new life in a new country. We continue to run free workshops for doctors new to the UK, offering practical guidance on ethical scenarios and the chance to connect with other internationally-qualified doctors. Last year, more than 10,500 international medical graduates attended a session. Concerted, sustained efforts are needed across the UK’s healthcare systems to provide the induction, integration and inclusion vital for those new to working as a doctor in the UK. Over the coming weeks, we’re reminding all physician associates (PAs) and anaesthesia associates (AAs) that registration will open on 16 December 2024. PAs and AAs on the voluntary registers will be invited to apply for registration by the end of January 2025. We're encouraging PAs and AAs not on the voluntary registers to apply as soon as they can from 16 December 2024. As we prepare to bring physician associates (PAs) and anaesthesia associates (AAs) into regulation from December 2024, we have written to PA and AA employers with an update on our progress. You can read the open letter on our website gmc-uk.org/news/news-archive… Within it, we explain: – How and when PAs and AAs should apply for registration depending on whether they’re on the relevant voluntary register or not – That we welcome their support in encouraging PAs and AAs to apply at their earliest opportunity when regulation begins – Our expectations for employers and their role in supporting PAs and AAs during the process. Regulation is a vital step towards strengthening patient safety and provides assurance that PAs and AAs have the right level of education and training, meet our standards and will be held to account if serious concerns are raised. We’ll continue to keep employers and other stakeholders updated on our progress in the lead-up to regulation.
