Who says you have to be a grown-up to make an incredible discovery? Felix, a 4-year-old fossil hunter whose remarkable find caught the attention of MDEQ State Geological Survey scientists at the 3rd Annual Franklin County Fossil Roadshow in Meadville! Among his collection of local treasures was a tiny fossil with a BIG history. Long before dinosaurs walked the Earth, these fascinating marine animals thrived in ancient oceans. And thanks to Felix's curiosity, one little piece of that prehistoric world has a new story to tell! The next incredible fossil discovery could be right beneath your feet! Something unexpected was hiding in the gravel of Blueskin Creek. During a routine geologic survey in Jefferson County, MDEQ scientists uncovered 16 fossilized shell fragments. But these weren’t from just any turtles, and what they revealed offers a glimpse into a Mississippi landscape very different from the one we know today. How old are they? What kind of turtles left them behind? And what can they tell us about how Mississippi has changed over time? Uncover the story in this week’s #FossilFriday: mdeq.ms.gov/geology/fossil-f… #mississippigeology #fossils #geology #itswhatwedoatmdeq
