We’re proud to celebrate Dr Omar Khorshid, a Perth-based orthopaedic surgeon
and long-standing MDA National Member of 29 years, who has been jointly
awarded the AMA’s highest honour — the 2025 Gold Medal.
As AMA President from 2020 to 2022, Dr Khorshid led with clarity and calm
through one of the most challenging periods in modern healthcare. He was a
trusted national voice during the COVID-19 pandemic — guiding the public,
representing the profession at National Cabinet, and advocating for a stronger,
more resilient health system.
Dr Khorshid’s legacy includes championing GPs in the vaccine rollout and
launching nation-shaping health campaigns that continue to influence public
policy.
Congratulations, Dr Khorshid — your leadership and decades-long commitment to
the profession are truly inspiring.

New WA Law: Firearm Health Assessments Now Mandatory
From 31 March 2025, doctors in Western Australia may be asked to complete a Firearm Authority Health Assessment (FAHA) for both new and existing firearm licence holders.
· FAHAs must be done by an AHPRA-registered medical practitioner
· Required every 5 years, or annually for those 80+
· Not covered by Medicare — private billing applies
· Doctors provide clinical input only — not licensing decisions
· You are not obligated to perform a FAHA
· Legal protections exist for voluntary reporting of safety concerns
Given the large number of gun licences in the WA, FAHAs for existing firearm authority holders will be staggered over the next five years.

We loved seeing all of your socks in support of Crazy Socks 4 Docs Day!
We’re proud to have been a major sponsor at the launch event in Perth last week, hosted by the Doctors' Health Advisory Service WA, and to continue supporting the breakdown of the stigma around mental health issues in doctors and health professionals.
We thank everyone that sent us through pictures of their socks, and we’re happy to share that we have also donated $1,000 to the organisation on behalf of MDA National and our Members.

As we close National Reconciliation week, we’re proud to be celebrating the success of the IRIS Program, who have recently reached their target of completing 800 cataract surgeries within two years across the Northern Territory.
Through our partnership with the Australian Society of Ophthalmologists and Vanguard Health, we are proud supporters of the IRIS program and the life-changing work that they do. So far, our funding towards the program has been allocated to sunglasses that are essential to post-operative care, and educational resources that have been translated into local Aboriginal dialects.
We support the IRIS Program’s vision of making quality healthcare accessible to all regardless of geographical location and will continue to extend our support to the program as they carry out their impactful work.
