The Moonta National Trust committee is poised to return as the rightful custodians of our Cornish cultural history and heritage sites with control restored to them in coming days. That the National Trust of South Australia thought they could destroy our town’s harmony and prosperity by shutting down the sweet shop and train which are fundraising initiatives that have become tourist drawcards, says more about them than it does about us. Successful fundraising has contributed to the maintenance and preservation of our heritage sites. Locking out and disrespecting volunteers across our sites of the miner’s cottage, family history centre and museum, and imposing their people should be in the ‘mistakes’ column, if they are capable of reflection and learning from their gross errors of judgement. The steadfast dignity of our committee and of this community in the face of name calling and verbal abuse directed at our community generally and our committee will not be forgotten. The community is proud of the accomplishments of successive committees which span the decades since 1964. We know our history. We honour our history and we have fought and won for control of our history and heritage. This is a community known for its long memories. The National Trust of South Australia held all the cards. There was nothing within their rules to appeal their aggressive, oppressive decision of 23rd February. Journalists, community leaders and politicians have borne witness to the unfairness, arrogance and unjust power of this once benevolent and venerable organisation, they have seen through the actions of the National Trust of South Australia and seen what it has become. We have had messages of support from around the state, across the country and from around the world. That’s why we had politicians vote unanimously for a parliamentary inquiry. All politicians support volunteers in regional communities. Hopefully, with the assistance of submissions to the inquiry we from Moonta, will lead the way toward changes to ensure a more respectful supportive environment for our volunteers who care for our history and heritage sites. Whether it is possible to reform the National Trust of South Australia and influence change of its culture and practices is yet to be discussed by the ERDC. The National Trust hasn’t demonstrated a modicum of humility or empathy for our committee or our community. An apology appears to be out of the question given that they have released a po-faced mean spirited statement. They could have and should have done better. It is a membership community based organisation that has truly lost its purpose. That is them and this is us. We had better start thinking about a party!
