Why the sniff test can't protect you against food poisoning. It might tell you something in your fridge is "off" but it won't help prevent food poisoning. Quadram Institute group leader @MATTwGilmour sniffs out the food safety facts from fiction. theconversation.com/the-snif…
Consider joining @hall_lab and our #Listeria group to study the interplay of this foodborne pathogen with the health promoting #Bifidobacterium in a fully-funded PhD programme!

We are very proud of the leadership opportunity to apply science to food safety challenges as a community built with food industry, government, and food researchers. More info to come!! @BBSRC @foodgov @TheQuadram
There are over 2.4 million cases of foodborne illness in the UK each year, costing up to £9 billion.
On #WorldFoodSafetyDay, BBSRC and @FoodGov are pleased to launch a brand new Food Safety Research Network, hosted by @TheQuadram.

I predict this will become a highly cited seminal review. Great new contribution from Andrew Rogers, @TsolisRenee and @abaumler on how Salmonella infiltrates the gut ecosystem

Today is also about acknowledging the pioneering #WomenInScience @TheQuadram. Dr Barbara Lund's work on Listeria in the 80's and her leadership, creativity and foresight continues to inspire us now, and makes our studies possible.

We particularly love Dr. Lund’s early work on the low-temperature growth of Listeria in the presence of spoilage organisms, using Listeria isolated from many food types that are now commonly implicated in outbreaks. #WomenInScience @TheQuadram

Fully-funded NRPDTP studentship, 'Understanding how Listeria survive in the food factory', available in the Gilmour Lab at the Quadram Institute.
Listeria is one of the few foodborne pathogens where the true GI incidence is a mystery - largely because we only isolate it from invasive cases. This important study shows it is commonly found in the gut, and how this state might affect selection of Listeria’s virulence genes.
Excited to share our latest preprint. A very good read!!

We mapped how all mutations to #SARSCoV2 receptor-binding domain (RBD) affect recognition by convalescent polyclonal human sera (biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/…).
Among implications: E484K (South African lineage) worrying for immune escape; RBD mutations in UK lineage less so (1/n).
