🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 ISLE OF BUTE—FINAL ENGAGEMENT: THE PUB A COMMUNITY REFUSED TO LOSE 💙 Friends, the Duke and Duchess of Rothesay concluded their first official visit to the Isle of Bute at a place with a truly special story—the community-owned Anchor Tavern Pub & Hub in Port Bannatyne. This was not simply a visit to a local pub. It was a celebration of what can happen when ordinary people come together and refuse to let the heart of their community disappear. When the Anchor Tavern closed in 2020, its loss left a significant emptiness in village life. But the residents of Port Bannatyne were not prepared to allow a treasured meeting place to vanish. They formed the Port Bannatyne Development Trust, purchased the premises in 2021 and, following extensive refurbishment, reopened its doors in April 2022. Today, the Anchor Tavern is once again filled with conversation, companionship and laughter. The neighbouring former off-licence has also been transformed into a flexible community hub where local groups can meet, events can be held and essential connections can continue to grow. During their visit, William and Catherine met some of the determined residents whose efforts secured the tavern’s future. They also spent time with people who regularly use the facilities—including members of the local dominoes club—and greeted members of the public gathered outside. There is something deeply moving about this story. A pub may appear to be only a building, but to those who live nearby, it can be the place where friendships begin, neighbours notice when someone is missing and people who might otherwise feel alone find companionship. These small, everyday interactions are often what hold a community together. The success of the community-owned tavern has now allowed the Trust to support other organisations across the island, including conservation projects, local sporting and social clubs and the Community Garden. What began as an effort to save one building has grown into something capable of helping an entire island community. William and Catherine’s day on Bute began with the traditions and volunteers of the Shinty Club, continued alongside those protecting the coastline at Ettrick Bay and ended here—among the people who came together to preserve a place of belonging.
