Unlike Ream Naval Base, this military logistics base in Laos is more ostensibly similar to the one in Djibouti. It may not be wrong to conclude this is the first full-fledged PLA overseas base in Southeast Asia. bloomberg.com/news/articles/…

China CG rams BFAR vessel on fuel subsidy mission for Filipino fishermen — 54 NM off Palawan This morning, 18 September 2026, China Coast Guard vessel CCG-21585 rammed BRP Datu Magat Salamat (MMOV 3015), the same BFAR vessel the Philippine Coast Guard assisted yesterday as it carried out its maritime patrol to deliver fuel subsidy to our fishermen. The sequence of events are as follows: At 11:04 AM, CCG-21585 cut across the stern of the BFAR vessel at a distance of only about 10 meters. At 11:13 AM, while MMOV 3015 was simply maintaining its course, the Chinese vessel repeated the maneuver and this time made contact, striking the BFAR vessel. As of 11:48 AM, the extent of the damage on the starboard side has been confirmed: main railings bent, broken, and detached; metal stanchions and support structures deformed; and deck fixtures and equipment displaced, with debris scattered across the deck. Even after the collision, CCG-21585 conducted yet another dangerous maneuver, passing dead astern at a distance of only about 5 meters. This took place at 09°34.445'N, 116°53.714'E — approximately 6.36 NM NNW of Abad Santos Shoal and only about 54 NM from the coast of Palawan — well within the Philippines' exclusive economic zone. PCG Commandant Admiral Ronnie Gil Gavan has already directed PCG surface and air assets to proceed to the location of the BFAR vessel to provide assistance and ensure the safety of its crew. Let us be clear about what this vessel was doing: it was bringing fuel to Filipino fishermen so they can keep fishing in our own waters and keep food on Filipino tables. The China Coast Guard deliberately rammed a civilian government vessel on a humanitarian and livelihood mission, endangering the lives of its Filipino crew. These actions are a blatant violation of the 1972 COLREGs, the 2016 Arbitral Award, and UNCLOS. No amount of ramming or dangerous maneuvering will change the fact that these waters belong to the Filipino people. The PCG will continue to support BFAR's missions in the West Philippine Sea, in accordance with the guidance of the President to ensure that our fishermen can safely exercise their rights in our own exclusive economic zone.

"The United States built a government designed to prevent the kind of centralized, sustained, cross-agency unity of effort that a decade-long irregular warfare campaign against a patient, centralized adversary requires." -👤Dr. Jeremiah “Lumpy” Lumbaca, PhD, a retired US Army Green Beret and current professor of irregular warfare, counterterrorism, and special operations with the Department of War (@LumpyAsia) in "Whole-of-Government Irregular Warfare May Not Be the Right Goal," a #SWJEssay

U.S. Whole-of-Government #IrregularWarfare might be a structural impossibility. 🏛️🇺🇸 Dr. Lumbaca (@LumpyAsia) examines this tension. The American constitutional system, built on the separation of powers, inherently resists the centralized unity that IW doctrine demands. Lumpy continues the whole of government IW discussion in SWJ by moving the focus from how to implement whole-of-government irregular warfare to whether it is even possible under the U.S. Constitution.

“The most consistent agreement across every audience – #SOF operators and COCOM staffers alike – is that cognitive threats are real and current military institutions are poorly organized to recognize (let alone resist) them.” That’s what Jeremiah "Lumpy" Lumbaca, PhD., a retired @USArmy Green Beret, has to say about cognitive warfare. “What Teaching Cognitive Warfare Taught Me About Cognitive Warfare” is full of this and other critical lessons. 📕 @IrregWarfare @LumpyAsia @USSOCOM #SWJPerspectivepiece #CognitiveWarfare smallwarsjournal.com/2026/06…

Over the last several weeks there have been a number of online articles by SF officers and NCOs providing their perspective on the roles and missions of Special Forces in this new 'strategic competition' environment. It has turned into a debate of sorts in the national security journals, on Signal, and in SF team rooms. "Lumby" Lumbaca explains why this is a good thing. ❓Was it a Deliberate Attack on the Philippines' desalinating machines on the BRP Sierra Madre? 🇵🇭 Philippine Navy Spokesperson to the West Philippine Sea Rear Admiral Roy Vincent Trinidad breaks down a concerning incident from October. He explains why the presence of cyanide near the BRP Sierra Madre might not have been standard fishing activity, but rather a targeted operation to poison the ship's desalinating machines.

As an Iranian watching this rescue mission unfold, I was praying the American pilot would make it out alive, not just for him, but so the Islamic Republic could not use him as a bargaining chip or claim some twisted “victory.” At the same time, I felt a deep envy. Your government sent elite special forces, million-dollar aircraft, and moved heaven and earth to bring one American home. No hesitation. No excuses. In Iran, the regime uses human shields and recruited child soldiers to clear minefields during the Iran-Iraq war. They treat their own people like disposable tools. They are now recruiting child soldiers as we speak. The Islamic Republic has zero regard for human life. That’s the brutal difference. One side risks everything to save their own. The other sacrifices their own to stay in power. This hits hard when you have lived under both realities.

Thank you, former Supreme Court Senior Associate Justice Antonio Carpio, for unearthing the 1875 Carta General del Archipiélago Filipino. For seven years, Justice Carpio traveled to Madrid, Spain, and various parts of the United States in pursuit of an original print of this historic map. He recently donated a copy to the National Library of the Philippines, where it now serves as a key historical document. The 1875 Carta General is one of the most complete and detailed official Spanish maps of the Philippine archipelago. It clearly depicts important Philippine territories, including: • Los Bajos de Paragua (the reef systems historically associated with the Spratly Islands, now known as Palawan’s Kalayaan Island Group) • Panacot (also called Bajo de Masinloc or Scarborough Shoal off the coast of Zambales) This map strengthens the historical basis for the Philippines’ position over these features, as it was later adopted and reissued by the United States War Department after the Spanish-American War. morningcoffeethoughts.org/18…

Photos of Thai crew from attacked cargo ship shared online Photos of a Thai crew member from the cargo vessel Mayuree Naree, which was attacked near the Strait of Hormuz, have surfaced on social media following the incident. The Thai-flagged bulk carrier was struck on March 11 while sailing near the strategic strait after departing Khalifa Port in the United Arab Emirates at about 8.15am local time. Ship owner Precious Shipping earlier informed the Stock Exchange of Thailand that three crew members are missing and believed to be trapped in the engine room. The company said it is coordinating with relevant authorities to rescue them. The remaining 20 crew members were safely evacuated and have reached shore in Oman. Meanwhile, international news reported that Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) admitted carrying out attacks on two vessels in the Strait of Hormuz on the same day, including the Thai-flagged Mayuree Naree. The IRGC claimed the vessel ignored warnings and attempted to pass through the strait illegally. Late on March 11, a Facebook user identified as A’ Pek posted photos of himself after being rescued from the ship. In one post he wrote: “Rest now. It’s time for you to rest. I hope everyone else stays safe,” referring to the vessel. He later shared images showing damage to the ship, writing: “Sorry I couldn’t bring you home. Didn’t they say they wouldn’t shoot Thai ships?” #Thailand #Iran #Israel #US #อิหร่าน #อิสราเอล #สหรัฐ #สงคราม #สงครามอิหร่าน #ช่องแคบฮอร์มุซ

I don't know who needs to hear this (well, actually I do) but the Defense Dept spending money on shellfish, ice cream, and steak for servicemembers at war, many of whom have been at sea for a long time already, is not a scandal. This is just basic taking care of the troops.
