Quit my W2 job in tech sales | Running a $45k/mo cleaning business with my wife | showing the daily struggles and wins

Joined July 2013
I quit my W2 tech sales job in January to run my wife and I's cleaning company full time. 6 months later we just had our first $40k month in revenue with a week to go in June! Margins should shake out to around 30-34%. This journey has been crazy, but we're having a blast. Very grateful.

Did a move-in clean for a customer opening up a new commercial space for his iPhone repair company 7 months ago. Recently my phone screen has been trippin and I remembered him so I reached out and he gave me 50% off to get it fixed since we helped him out in a jam with the cleaning awhile back. These are the small but beautiful parts of building a network in business

My new VA has booked 7 cleans in her first full week live🔥 Got an hour call review session today to go over the ones she didn't close, and every week we are doing 2 one hour sessions to go over things she could've done better, but this is a great start.

A girl at the gym today was benching 190lbs (wild) and the guy next to her was benching 185lbs. I saw him look over, notice it, and put on 10 more pounds to his so he would be doing more. I watched him epically fail while the girl did hers with ease😭

Just this month alone, we've had 15 cleaner interviews set up that did not show. No matter if we sent reminders ahead of the call, scheduled the initial phone screening just an hour after speaking, or the cleaner confirmed they were good to go right before the scheduled time. 15...

We got our 2nd 1-star review yesterday in 2 years because my VA's call dropped mid-conversation, and it took 20 minutes for us to call the customer back as she was restarting her laptop. I called back 2 times, left a voicemail, texted, and then got a 1-star review about how unprofessional we are.... Some people are sick man...

My new VA has been live for 3 days after 2 weeks of training, and giving up control is already hard. Cleaners and customers who’ve known me for 2 years are now talking to someone new. She’s making small mistakes I wouldn’t, but I know she needs room to learn. Meanwhile, I’m watching Quo like a hawk and jumping in to fix things lol. Any advice for someone new to delegating?

Customer calls us at 7:30am for a biohazard cleanup, walkthrough completed by 8:30am, booked for $1200 by 9:30am. Good start to the day.

The day I don’t have to jump out of the shower to answer a call on a Sunday will be a great day for our business lol

What is the deal with customers giving us their entire life story every time they call to book a cleaning??? Do other service businesses deal with this? I can’t imagine someone calling the dentist to book an appointment and telling them about every traumatic event they’ve ever experienced. But the second someone calls about getting their house cleaned, EVERYTHING comes out lol. I try to be sympathetic, but after hearing 5–10 sob stories a day, I find myself rolling my eyes. Please tell me we aren’t the only ones dealing with this lol

I always share the good in our business on here, so it’s only fair I share the bad. We’re getting obliterated this month lol. Probably our most cancellations/reschedules ever in a 2-week stretch, and some of our lowest new rev in months. Luckily, we started with more on the books this month than ever, so we should still finish well. But between that and dozens of interview/test clean no-shows, it’s been brutal. I know these stretches happen, but man it still don’t feel good lol. Will report back at month-end and see if we can turn it around🫡

After 2 straight weeks of all-day training, my VA’s first day live is here and she’s already rocking. I slept in a bit today and woke up to multiple lead forms handled, cleaner messages answered, a reschedule handled and all review requests sent—in her first hour. Not groundbreaking to some lol, but boy was this sweet to see after nearly 2 years of my wife and I doing everything. Onwardddddd

Was wondering why this month has felt slow for our business, then I went back and looked at our data... Bookings from the 1st–15th are actually higher than 5 of the last 6 months. But most are sub-$280 jobs: new recurring cleans, smaller homes, etc. Fewer big deep cleans and move-outs than usual. It’s the job mix making it feel slow, not booking volume. Still figuring out what to make of it, but when you meticulously track your data you can see what’s actually happening instead of guessing.

After a first time clean for a customer do you guys go for the recurring ask first or the review ask? This has been my challenge since day one lol.
