Law Roach is opening up about the very beginning of his career, naming R&B singer K. Michelle as his first official client. Speaking with TS Madison, Roach said he began working with Michelle after she signed to Atlantic Records. “K. Michelle was my very first client, my very first like… paying client,” he recalled. Atlantic put him on a $12,000-a-month retainer. “I thought I was rich, girl,” Roach laughed. One of his earliest styling choices almost didn’t make it to the stage. Eager to deliver a major moment, the then-young stylist rented a Tom Ford runway dress, but Michelle turned it down “My fans not going to understand that,” she told him. “I don’t want to wear that. I want to wear this.” Roach described her as “country” and said she wanted her image to evolve at the same pace as her audience. “What she taught me was don’t go too far too fast,” he said. “She wanted to grow with her fans. She wanted her fans to grow up as she grew up. That was the biggest lesson I learned from K.” The partnership wasn’t always smooth. Roach called Michelle “tough” and admitted their last collaboration ended in a serious argument. Still, he credits her with teaching him a great deal before he began working with Zendaya. “K was the first,” Roach said. “I’ll never forget.”
